Horizon Pop Top - Experience

I was 100% set on a Horizon roof, but after speaking to an approved installer I quickly changed my mind. What they were telling me was very eye opening. They used to fit the Hilow, and have now fitted several Horizon roofs and said they will be stopping fitting them due to several reasons. Food for thought!

Are you able to share the issues please and/or who you went with in the end and why?

Have recently (beginning 2024) had a Horizon roof fitted (T6 LWB)…

Pros…looks great, very subtle (yes you do lose some headspace to fit the system in, no back seats for us, as when looked found with RIB seat clearance / comfort was getting tight (bench seat instead) and great standing clearance front and back).

The cons… had (some fixed) and having some problems: (ponding / standing water (roof bows, and also water held within recessed gutters against canvas), leaks at gutter to canvas junctions, poor quality control in pop up moulding). Luckily asked for roof installation with no finishing, so easier to see / fix. Working with and resolving with installer and supplier first before post outcome. Both installer and supplier fully engaged and very constructive in resolving, so hopefully sorted soon…watch this space!
Hi oldgoat - did you manage to get the issues resolved? - I really want an Horizon roof but I am a little worried about issues you mentioned above - especially for the cost.

I am willing to have a bet that it was an installer not far from you.
If it is, it is the same installer that recently had to send a van to the manufacturer (of the alternative roof they ‘fit’) to get the roof fitted as they couldn’t do it themselves. All done without consulting said van owner.

No…design & install problems remain unresolved. Roof currently un-useable as leaks, plus a number of other unresolved issues. Lost lots of time and trips away. In correspondence with both supplier and installer, and have since spoken to a number of other installers. Have another meeting soon to inspect, will update thereafter. Yes looks good when closed and when van is stationary, otherwise a number of apparently fundamental compromises.

What are the design and install problems?

What are the design and install problems?
See previous thread…drainage (eg outlets above base of gutter so doesn’t easily drain, hinge in gutter traps water, gutters bow down at centres to accommodate hinge), ponding (eg gutters, canvas at base of gutter so water sits against canvas), quality of moulding (eg roof ponds water, wind noise, rattles, leak through roof rail), installation (eg bits cut here, bent there, not straight…not easy to fit). Otherwise looks good lol.

Sounds like you've suffered from a really poor install there. Hope you get it all resolved soon (and then you can name and shame).

Is a mix…design issues (most are known!) have caused further installation issues, and design issues (again most known) that need addressing and items rectified and replaced. Maybe the reason some installers decided to no longer fit.

The fundamental design of the Horizon roof is based on that of the HiLo Sport, which is what I have fitted to my van.

I've had no such problems, so, unless they've gone majorly backwards with the design, it's your install that has gone badly wrong. This wouldn't be any surprise as it's a costly, time-consuming and difficult pop-top to install correctly, leading to some installers cutting corners and bodging the job. This is what did for the original HiLo company (that and p***-poor customer service).

Agree in part there’s installation issues, although also design issues (eg position of drainage holes, hinges, canvas, errors in mouldings…) which installer has no choice or influence on (although found out they, and supplier, knew these existed when raised problems post install). The installer does have a good reputation (with supplier) and don’t wish to identify who’s at fault (installer / supplier / mix) when still unsure of root causes…

I will DM you if that’s ok as I’m collecting some facts and figures and would be interested to get some measurements from your roof to compare. Plan to share outcome when solutions / resolution agreed by all parties.

And if anyone else has a HiLo or Horizon roof, and would be able to share (anonymously) a few details and pictures; DM me and I can get a wider range of information before I re-meet with the installer to look at. Thanks.

Yeah, sure. Happy to provide info if it helps.

Thanks for the honest feedback oldgoat - will hold off another while before getting one hopefully horizion will do the right thing and sort out manufacturing/design issues with the next model/version of this amazing looking poptop - hopefully your issue will be sorted out soon

Sorry you are having these issues. Seems strange that others are not. WHy not post some pics of the issues you are having, then others can comment?
