How common are EGR problems really?

Seems to be a lot of contradictory information about this but the guys that did the EGR software delete said it wasn't going to cause any issues and the DPF will do it's own thing anyway (apparently the T6 is worse than the T5.1 (great news eh?) )

I’m not even a novice when it comes to car programming, but I have dabbled in PLC’s. The EGR does not work all the time, so I would imagine ‘mapping’ it out just means you would set ranges on the inputs that would never be achieve so it will not open, therefore keeping all remaining functions in place.
Like I said though, I’m 99% sure I have no idea what I’m talking about.

But if you remove the EGR and leave the DPF in place, won't the DPF become blocked due to the higher soot content in the exhaust?

I don't see that. The EGR is not designed to capture soot. it gets sootted up.

I read on darkside's website if you remove EGR then the DPF needs removing/deleting else it becomes blocked. Or words to that effect

That is just written to scare people and generate business. I’d like to see some evidence to back up their claims on the benefits, especially the lowers the engine temp. We all know the purpose of an egr is to reduce oxygen in the chamber which reduces the burn temp and the nasties produced.

im no fan of the egr, but I’m even less of a fan of bullshit.

If you leave the EGR it will block up and ‘delete’ itself, if you then monitor the DPF soot level you’ll find out if the DPF becomes more problematic.

I think you will find the ERG has to close for a regen so a delete or blanking will be fine . If you get a ERG that sticks open or even part open will cause regeneration problems. I had mine play up in the first lockdown and the AA said they would of Blanked it if it wasn’t under warranty for me until I could get it fixed.

Would be interesting to here if anyone has blanked egr only and what issues they have had, if any?

Just drive it like you stole it all the time and your egr will never open!
Problem with that is the MPG would be so low it would be cheaper to replace the EGR assembly every year.

In my first week of owning a T6 (2016 T32 140) the EML came on, got it plugged in and it was the EGR. Was I gutted? Yep! Did I think I’d made a big mistake buying a van? Yep! In the end I bought a new valve for £230 and spent a Saturday morning fitting it. I’m not mechanically minded, I read up on here and watched a couple of videos and got on with it! Once complete I got a real sense of achievement and a better understanding of things work (under the bonnet). Don’t let the thought of a “potential” issue put you off. If you buy a T6 and run into an EGR issue I would be happy to help you with any advice (for what it’s worth), as I’m sure other people on here will too!
Hi Dave - did you have to use VCDS to test it or was it a simple swap?

My coil light came on.......then went off when I switched the ignition off and re started. Hasn't come on since (200 miles ago??). A mechanic told me it's an early sign of egr problems yet carista didn't throw up a fault code????

I had an EGR fault but never saw the coil symbol. Just the engine light and an AdBlue fault light.
