How common are EGR problems really?

My coil light came on.......then went off when I switched the ignition off and re started. Hasn't come on since (200 miles ago??). A mechanic told me it's an early sign of egr problems yet carista didn't throw up a fault code????
My coil light came on just as I was exiting the motorway to take a break after driving up the M40 & M6 on cruise control for about 2 hours. The light stayed on and the engine management wouldn't let the engine start. The problem was a fractured pipe, that was replaced but meant a night in the services and 10 days wait until the VW garage had a space to look at the problem and fix. Unfortunately the EML came on a week later on the M3 at Basingstoke, VW now believe an EGR flush is required, I asked if it would be better to replace the EGR but they seemed to indicate that this wouldn't address the problem in the long-term - not convinced. However common theme of constant motorway driving and cruise control?

In my first week of owning a T6 (2016 T32 140) the EML came on, got it plugged in and it was the EGR. Was I gutted? Yep! Did I think I’d made a big mistake buying a van? Yep! In the end I bought a new valve for £230 and spent a Saturday morning fitting it. I’m not mechanically minded, I read up on here and watched a couple of videos and got on with it! Once complete I got a real sense of achievement and a better understanding of things work (under the bonnet). Don’t let the thought of a “potential” issue put you off. If you buy a T6 and run into an EGR issue I would be happy to help you with any advice (for what it’s worth), as I’m sure other people on here will too!

Hi Dave - newbie here. Looking at a T6 2017 SWB 102 that has 69k on clock. The private seller says new EGR was fitted under warranty Dec 20 for £900 odd. Should I be relieved that’s it’s done for the future (and hopefully no repeats) or worried that there may be other issues from the original failure? Views from all much appreciated. Trying to balance the excitement of entering T6 ownership with the worry over all the potential dramas that might be in the horizon!!

Hi and welcome!
I think it really depends of how it's used, short journeys and being left ticking over is how I see them getting blocked. Don't let the EGR put you off buying a T6!

Thanks so much. It will become the 2nd car (replacing TT - what am I doing??!!) so as much as there will be short journeys to shops etc it’ll become the weekend family car for outings into the great outdoors for adventures with the dog. Not forgetting the proper touring camping holidays to replace having to take a massive tent and 2 cars!

Out of interest - what do you consider a short/long journey ?

I’m not so sure. It’s closed in those situations. Try blowing down a tube where the end is blocked.

Short journey is typically considered as one where the van is not up to temp for upto half the journey. Short journeys fill the dpf quicker, but the egr is closed at tick over, when cold, and under acceleration. Egr opens under steady state conditions, so mainly long motorway journeys.

A lot of egr issues are because the egr is clogged with a mixture of soot and oil from the crankcase products being vented into the air intake system. There has been a lot of discussion on diesel forums about improvements being made with a crankcase breather oil catch tank. Once installed the egr only has the soot to deal with and therefore failures are reduced.

I know this relates to petrol engines but the rationale is the same:

Hello, new in the group. Had a T6 2.0 150hp DSG since 2019 (2nd hand at less than 10000 kms, build in 2018). About 2 years of dirty cooling system, and finally they replaced the EGR under warranty, but also the cylinder head, etc, the EGR is for me the initiator of many linked problems.

The new one is the 04L.131.512.CF, so the same as many of you, used as a repaired item, and also default on T6.1 I think.

I don’t find any feedback on this new piece, so please can you share your experiences since your replacements ?

In other words, is the replacement EGR (CF starting from about 2019, so many of you I think) more reliable ? Because it seems that the genuine ones are not very reliable..

No idea on specifics, but my bus is a 204, 5 years old, 38,000 miles, does lots of short journeys and has never suffered any egr faults nor dpf blockages etc.

I've said before, but my routine is 5k oil/filter changers, always premium fuel BP/Shell/Texaco etc and every 3 or 4 tanks I put in some additives (Hydra).

I personally think this routine keeps my diesel van happy, keeping fingers crossed I don't curse myself

Out of interest do you mean premium fuel as in the brands themselves (as stated) or the higher priced Utlimate/supreme diesel?

Or maybe both?!

Sorry, yes should have been more specific, the higher priced juice with additives such as V Power/Ultimate etc.

I think the lower grade diesel is the same no matter where you buy it from, be it supermarkets or retail petrol stations.

No point buying the good stuff on lease vehicles or something you plan to punt on in a year or two, but mine's a keeper.
