How do you know if your VW has Hill Assist

Is your van- manual or automatic, as I believe only works on an auto box. I have a switch on the dash that shows anti slip, but not for hill start, unless one and the same. Other than the obvious of finding a hill. That's all I can offer.

Do you mean how does it work?

Or do you mean how do you tell if it's been fitted because you think it's not working?

I believe it's only fitted with DSG gearboxes. If you are on a slope (officially of more then 5%) in Drive [or first gear] with the handbrake off if you take your foot off the brake then the van will hold the brake for about 1.5 seconds and release as you press the throttle.

One thing to watch is I find the release point a bit early, especially when it's a backwards slope.

Yes, same thing.

"Hill hold" is the term normally used with traditional torque converter boxes

"Hill Assist" is the VW term on the DSG as nearly all the electronic aids are called "Something Assist" on the VW platform

Mine isn’t showing hill assist in the list of assistants on the mfd so maybe this is different like hill descent/ascent control on 4M vans?

"Hill Descent" is a specific system for the Haldex AWD system.

And no "Hill Assist" will not show up as it's not configurable and you can't turn it on or off.

(Well you can configure the release point a little bit via VCDS/OBD11 - I have mine set to release on more throttle than normal as it was fine with forward slopes but always rolled back a bit on upward slopes)

Thanks, it's a manual, I don't see any signs on the dash so maybe it's only on Automatic as you say.

I thought they all had it from the T6 onwards. It isn't something that you can switch on & off, it's just "there". Are you confusing it with "Hill descent control"?

I am getting really confused. Let's start with the original quest. Can you not balance brake-clutch-throttle. How steep is this hill. Are you up or down. Driving up or reversing back? Have you a trailer, or caravan attached that drives this question. This is basic 1st day driving skills. I am not really trying to be facetious, but am mystified, that you need this device. If this was a USA web site, I maybe able to understand the conundrum. ( No disrespect to American drivers who have never driven a motor with a stick shift) ( Pretty Woman and a Norfolk made Lotus). ;)

It's there.

You may not have noticed it, or it may not have engaged. Took me a while to understand it, not having experienced it before.

Find a safe slope and try it. Brake and clutch, no handbrake, then foot off brake and see what happens!

The question was never about needing the assistance, merely wondering how to tell if the system is fitted.

Yes and no. Short of having three feet, I'm sure that most of us learned how to start on an incline with the handbrake. Perhaps that's what you meant?

The hill hold/assist function, while not necessary, can be useful. This is especially so with the handbrake being a little further away than in most cars.
Tha handbrake is the obvious and proper choice for holding the van stationary in most circumstances. In stop start traffic on a hill or waiting for a gap to pull out into, It is quite useful and often works so well that you don't notice it's there...
