How Secure Are T6.1’s

All Useful tips on this page, and I'm interested in the Meta Trak Deadlock S5 - Which seems to do both traking ad Immobiliser in one package. But dont know the cost of that yet.

MetaSat standard tracker and a Ghost II may be a better choice.

No key fobs required and will be effective against stollen keys.

How does the ghost system work when you need to leave your van with someone, say a garage for a mot or service.
I've seen this. There is a "valet" mode you can set it to. With that they can start and move the van around a garage etc. But as soon as they go above 30 MPH, the immobiliser is tuned back on. Once the van is turned off - the immobiliser kicks back in again.

I thought that the 6.1 transmitted live to VW UK? Do they not have a live feed, of what every 6.1 is doing, performance, where, GPS tracking, when, every single parameter etc? A big brother in the cab watching our every move.

I was reading about that, and just installed the VW We Connect App. I get my van later today so I will play around a bit with that.

Any and this sort of information will most likely be made available to other agencies! A consideration may be required as to whether that is in one best interests. If someone accidentally is, where they ought not to be or inadvertently committing an offence such as speeding. Then may that be used as evidence against them? If it is live, then perhaps could some one, have speeding ticket waiting for them on their return home, from their holiday?

My T6 was one of the late one off the line and it was a cancelled order. At the time, I had specked everything that I wanted on the VW website and waited and waited. VW did advise me me that they were no longer making the T6. Yet they left the order form on line for a long time. I was left wondering what was going on and why my order was not being acted upon. I had to go to a dealership and ask. They told me that the 6 was no more, it was now the 6.1 and they had little information. So I waited, excitedly for news of the update. Well, after a while, I heard about all the wonderful things that the 6.1 would have. I may have got the wrong end of the stick and some one or probably all the many experts here will laugh and say I misunderstood. That the 6.1 ECU could be read and updated remotely. That and given that the navigation system may also be capable of being interrogated, made me a little uncomfortable. I realise that all of this is on our ECU anyway and every time VW service our T6, T5 ect that they down load all of this information. Being watched live is beyond the pail, so to speak. The information stored, tells even, what and when, a window or door is opened and for how long, not to mention all of the other things that the ecu has on it! So they know if you have been ragging it come warranty claims. Possibly they may know when one is visiting ones mistress too, smiles. So I bought a T6 and await discovery at a latter date, ha ha.

I would be very much relieved to be shown that I am wrong because unfortunately, this is where the world has being going for some time.

Yes, this is all very much technically possible as of right now, however, with GDPR, the already tainted reputation of VW would be hit badly if it were to actually happen in practice, remember that insurance companies are already doing this and gencies would need a court order to request the data.
The worry would be if you were involved in an accident that was not your fault and that accident involved a fatality, this data could be requested as part of an investigation and your driving profile could be subject to challenge in court.

Thank you Loz,

One always hopes, perhaps believes that the state is benevolent. Things change, Governments, change, the Law gets changed. As we are now out of the EEC, our rights will change also. Who knows who will have access or what private company or to what country. Is it all for our benefit? Obviously security agencies and up till now through them lesser lower entices by purchase or agreement. In the future, if not now I suspect that police will have direct access. Its all or the majority of manufacturers now, not just VW. I do not think that a single manufacturer would have to bare the responsibility alone. Even without having concern for spooky things, could they in future wipe off a performance or transmission map, without warning or consent, remotely? Could someone's vehicle be stopped, by an accidental key stroke or by an unfortunate, ill-conceived manufacturers map update from some far away office? I simply would not know. Like many things that are changed with with specification of vehicles, which we moan, complain rejoice for. This remote access is just the same. It will have benefits but their will also always be defects. I just wonder what they all might be and as I do not know and as I suspect nor do many other unconnected people either. I chose not to have the very latest model. I know in some countries vehicles, cars, not (VW) have just stopped working and become immobile just because the vehicles navigation system stopped reviving a signal from a sat and people where stranded. Could a criminal entity gain access to a vehicle remotely? That is all. If someone was putting tyres or some other fitting on a vehicle that may store up potential problems or have some consequence, then someone would raise a question or suggest someone think about it. This is just the same thing.
