we have 2 portable single induction hobs. Was going to have 1 that was a double, but for storage and more important if using a large pan the double didn't cut it.
We got a Vango sizzle double hob for a decent price. Used it a few times when on hook up and happy with it. Nowhere near as powerful as the hob at home obviously but had no issues so far.
We use our fitted induction hob purely for our first kettle boil of the day. We use various Cadac devices for cooking under the various awnii as soon as we are awake proper! During the day the induction hob turns in to a useful hard place to put cups and stuff on to not spoil the oak worktop. The sink makes a useful breadbin/tea coffee storage zone.
The hob is useful for tea on the go when we are out and about, so we wouldn't be without it.
They pop up in the Aisle of Dreams & The Middle of Lidl every now and then for not a lot. We’ve had some good experiences of Aldi electrical goods, they usually come with a no quibble 3 year warranty.
We have a single tefal from amazon and a cheapy from Wilkinsons ...both have served us very well but are due for replacement now .
IMHO its simply not worth fitting a hob , with a portable you can take it wherever you like , store it away when not in use and if it ever packs up just replace it with whatever you like at the time and not worry about having to fill the hole.
Lakeland had a good one last time , very slim but was a little dearer than the others .
Be careful of anything that has a plastic edging to the cooking surface as if your pan moves it gets melted
Ideally you want something just with a glass top that is easy wipe spills from and is slim so easy to store .
Also use a single one, it's the IKEA model. Cost me £35 so not the cheapest but works really well. Is perhaps slightly deeper than other ones available, but worked on all campsite EHUs so far.
Thanks for the many and varied replies. I had a double gas burner in my last van but really fancy a built in induction this time round. We would usually be on hook up but if not I've a 200Ah Li battery and 3000W inverter that will power it.
I like things to be neat and tidy and like the visual aesthetics of the clean built in look. I also want the hob to be instantly available and not be arsing around the van looking for it in a press and finding somewhere to plug it in.
Here here @BenT5 ! Ours is there when the roof isn't up when we are in a cold miserable carpark somewhere. Also makes a good base for the coffee machine. Plus being a SWB, space is at a premium, we would struggle to put it safe somewhere with all the tat that 'we' take out with us!
Looks cool too...
We use our van to it's full potential so it never looks tidy as in everything put away every inch of space is used including the floor until we get on site
From both an aesthetic and a practical viewpoint, having an uninterrupted counter-top for the >95% of time the hob isn't in use, was my choice, but it would be a really boring forum (and world) if we all thought the same and had the same opinions.
