Insurance Recommendations Please

Anyone got any recommendations for insurers they've used recently? Quotes for my Sportline are coming in way above the £840 I paid for last year and most of those are valuing the van way below market too I notice. Worlds gone mad

I was recommended Howdens (formerly A-Plan) by Simply Surf Bus where I bought my van. They're a broker who finds an underwriter to support your needs. I've always had competitive quotes and they insure all the modifications I've declared. I think t6forum membership gets you a small discount as well, although I use a different discount as I was referred.

My insurance premium went down this year. Having heard of a few folks seeing insurance price increases on this forum, I wasn't expecting that.

Cheers, I'll have a look with Howdens, although I have just had a decent quote from Carole Nash. Direct line almost wanted double what I paid last year, and some even refused to quote!

Just as a point of order, it doesn't matter what an insurer "values" it at today. It's irrelevant.

Market value on the day it is written off is what matters, and that is easily evidenced by way of the vast volume of adverts for used vehicles. You'd be entitled not to it's trade value, but the the retail value of a similar replacement, and the ombudsman has become quite hot over this the last couple of years.

Something to be careful of: If you give a lower insurance value figure then they’ll go with that even if the market value is higher. At renewal you have to keep an eye on the figure they give. I’ve got a new for old policy currently and at my last renewal I had to up my insured figure to cover the price increase of a new replacement. Will be going agreed value when I next renew as new for old will no longer be available to me.

Try Brentacre I’ve been with them since I bought my first VW T6.1 in 2021, I only had the van 6 - 7 weeks when I had a my fault accident with another vehicle our van only had 600 miles on the clock.
Brentacre were brilliant sorted everything out and the following year my premium only went up £50.

Don't give a figure unless you're buying an agreed value polocy - just state "market value" and place the ball in their court. Some won't like that, so just go to the next one.

I just went with Adrian Flux. £95 per month as the converted camper it is, along with EU breakdown cover. Previously it was just insured as a panel van, no breakdown cover and that was £85. With a van that's 21 years old and leaking every type of fluid onboard; I need all the help I can get :slow rofl:

Howdens (A plan ) wanted over a grand for my Sportline. Brentacre wouldn’t insure because they only do seriously modified vans.
I went with LV who wanted £480 including European cover and agreed value of £40k.
No need to say I bit there hand off!

I tried all the usual suspects, LV told me they don’t insure campervans any more (?!?) - no one came close to the company I was with last year which is Caravanguard

Only issue is they won’t do agreed value. Howden’s Thatcham gave me a quote about £300 higher and sent me their requirements to arrange agreed value but after sending them all the photos & info they requested they never came back to me.

Have you considered purchasing a standalone AV policy?
I phoned a few companies last year and none would do it unless I insured with them. The only companies I can recall who said no were Adrian Flux and Just Kampers and they were both well over £1k for an ordinary policy. I can’t remember the others, Howden’s didn’t respond to me when I sent them the details a couple of weeks ago.

I’ve renewed with Caravanguard now but if you know of any who’ll do a standalone AV policy I’ll gladly give them a call!

Adrian Flux, who used Trinity Lane as their Agreed Value Policy company. You can't buy directly from Trinity Lane though.
Hmm I wonder if they refused me because they’d given me an ordinary quote and I wouldn’t take a policy out with them.. I’ll try them again

I’ve heard this the last couple of years. I think they are not taking on new campers but happy to renew existing clients - and still at good prices.
My camper conversion is still insured with them (I ring around at renewal and try the comparison sites but nobody beats them) and they are the only company that don’t do something daft like try doubling my premium at renewal as my car insurance provider did, despite another year of no claims (although I’m at the max already). The cheek of then dropping the price by a third when I say I’m not renewing and asking me if I want to stay with them!

I thought AF were the least fussy of all! I called them with 25+ days to go until renewal, and must say they looked after me to the tune of £150 less than the year before. I claimed on a bike policy previously with them and they were so good, I can only recommend them. My bike is still with them and my daughters Fiat 500 policy before passing her test is ridiculously cheap. I'm sure they will sting us when she passes her test!
