Is this normal for a door seal?

I picked up my Kombi last week and this morning when I was faffing about in the back I noticed I could see daylight through the tailgate seal. A bit of further prodding showed I could very easily push the seal aside.

Is this normal? The gap I can understand as it has to be joined somewhere but the ‘looseness’ seems a little odd unless it’s due to it being at the point of least leverage of the tailgate.

Apologies for a possibly silly question but it’s my first van and also the most I’ve ever spent on anything that’s not a house.

I wouldn’t say it’s normal but I would say it’s just VW sloppiness (the have a big dept).
You should be able to gently work the butts of the seal together by tapping gently with a soft faced mallet.
IMO it isn’t ideal to have the seal butts in the centre as that is where most in/out traffic occurs, however I wouldn’t advise pulling it all off just to change that now.

Thanks DXX. I’ll leave it be. As for the overall tightness of the seal when shut is it normal to be able to easily put you finger between (not just where the ends of the seal are) the door? The boot looks in-line with the other panels so I’m guessing it’s as it should be.
