LED/HID bulb conversion now MOT failure.

Any garage will check the alignment and whether they dazzle for you. But you’re right, halogen lights are hopeless, LED lights should be standard equipment on all new vehicles and probably will be in a couple of years.
I doubt they'll become standard anytime soon, these vans are often bought by companies (Like the AA) whos accountants don't care if the driver can see 40 yards up the road on a dark night, they're just interested in getting vans on the road as cheaply as possible.
VW know that owner drivers will frequently pay the exorbitant cost of the upgrade on the options list, so increasing their profit.

I meant due to regulation, not manufacturer’s choice.

Ah, very possibly, and actually when you consider that LED's draw a fair bit less power it might be that the electric Transporter of the future will use them to preserve battery power for getting you home!

I don't know if the T6 can come off the production line as an emergency service spec vehicle, but the Scottish Ambulance Service T6's all seem to have LED's and unusually, alloys. Somebody somewhere decided the H4's weren't up to a blue light run, by the look of it.

My van had its first MOT last Feb with LEDs in the H4s and passed so I'm leaving them in for its next MOT on Monday as an experiment and I'll report back. Worst case I'll stick the halogens back in and retest it.
Ok, the good news is that the lights passed the MOT, the bad news is it still failed because it has a bulge on the inside of the nearside rear tyre. Getting a new tyre fitted Wed and then representing to get the pass cert. Gutted as I'm going to get new wheels once I'd worn these tyres down to 3mm and had done a really good job of swapping to keep them even (they're all on 4mm).
So to sum up, it passed with LEDs in H4 headlight, sidelight, DRL (halogens in fogs).
