Lots of errors!!!

Fixed! Well sort of.

BCM and start stop error gone.

Lin wire had strong 11+ volts from bcm before I connected it.

Connected, cleared codes and no more bcm error, started generator is now seen. And not stop start error on dash.

Still said battery monitoring module no coms, so maybe it was also dead after all.

But I am getting close.

Time to pack up for tonight, the van has a ghetto wire pushed in pin 37, and taped up and outside the van .

At least I lnow what job I meed to do tomorrow!

I am hoping the battery control module error goed away once evrything is back together. But if not, maybe the monitor was also dead!

Very odd

Big thanks to @Lightrofit for all his help so far!!

I will report back once I’ve reversed the ghetto speaker wire mod (only bit I had left long enough lol) and done properly tomorrow.

Ok couldn’t resist, poured a rum and coke and went back out and hit it.

Found a spool of strong ass wire, pulled the inspection panels on the bulkhead, fed the wire in, pulled the BCM connectors and spliced into the good wire on the back of pin 37. Ran the wire in the plenum, cable tied to existing loom running along to the battery and put it through the back to the battery area.

Cleared errors from disconnecting bcm and started. Looking much healthier now!

Stop start error gone on dash, and no body control module errors.

Its still reporting an intermittent fault with the battery module weirdly, but I’ve disconnected and reconnected so many times, I think I need to solder the wires tomorrow and then just use it for a bit and see what happens.

Thanks for everyones interest and help so far and @Lightrofit thanks for the help with prt numbers, and advice, your post confirming the lin wire being spliced and not coming out the alternator plus that wiring diagram hit the jackpot. I owe you a few beer tokens, you’ve got PM :)

Getting closer, will update when I’ve finished and tested over the weekend.

Oh yeh, new wire :) I need to solder and put interior trim back tomorrow.

Anyone who finds this wanting to do anything in future to the bcm, the grommet under the driver side inspection panel (behind airbox) enters right at the bcm.

The BCM wiring is also actually OK to get to, I just removed the steering joint cover near the pedals (two torx screws) and popped out the black plastic cover under the dash. Once the two connectors are out of the bcm (press the clip at the bottom of each connecter in, and slide the latch on each connector back, like a VAG quadlock), there’s a small tab on each side of the connector at the top. TBH, I just pulled each side of the outer plastic apart and gave a gentle tug and the connectors inside pop out.

You can then slide each connector apart into two blocks, and the pin numbers are printed on each block near the pins. I’m buggered if I could see them though, so the camera on my phone came in handy!

A few other things I have discovered:

- Don’t be a dick and replace the enire lin cable from alternator to battery module if you suspect a break! I thought I was doing a ‘proper job’ by replacing the lot, only to find out the bloody wire splits off to the BCM just under the battery!
- If you have a basic volt meter, back probe the end of the lin wire and ground the volt meter to the battery terminal, you should see at least 10.8 to 11.2 at rest. My original lin wire showed 10.3, but that only told part of the story, after rewiring the alternator, that wire was 10.8-11. But when I went back and tested both ends of the same wire (now only connected to the body control module end) it only showed 3.5-4v at rest.
- When I tested lin voltage directly from pin 37 on the new wire It was just over 11v at rest
- If you have obdeleven, go to module 61, channel 1, Generator status should be 1 if it is communicating if not status will likely be 0 and you will not be able to clear your ‘lost communication to body control module’ error in 01 engine.
- Lost communication to Body Control Module, if everything else is working, it just means a device that should be communicating with the BCM isn’t.
- The break in the lin wire to alternator and battery module, may be hidden, as mine was, I struggled to find a break or damage from the back of the alternator plug all the way up to the bit that is wrapped under the battery. I now suspect although the signal was low (10.3), the real problem was hidden where the wiring split off to the body control module.
- Last of all, wiring diagrams are very useful!

Have a good night all.

i got up early completed the wiring and put everything back together. Ran some errands and stop start even kicked in.

I’ll continue to test and check, but for now, on to the next problem lol. My van is being a right pain in the ass atm.

Oh yes, forgot to mention the BDM is reporting status of 1 now instead of 0 too, and I have some battery parameters showing, weird it seems to take a while to register / wake up after fixing the wiring.
