MFSW - Golf GTd MkVII + DSG Paddles -- How I Done It --

So a bit of an update, not many places seem to be able to code the wheel, in fact from what I've found out today I'm not sure anyone actually 'codes' the GTi wheel to a T6.

The guys that did my B14's and ARB's have said they've fitted a few GTi wheels to T6's and the way they do it is to de-solder the surface mount chip on the button assembly and move it over to the other button assembly.

Happy for anyone else to chime in and say they can be coded, but I'm struggling to find anyone down South that can do it this way.

This looks promising..

.

These guys are the one's I've tried (they fitted my Ghost), they are good at most things, but they want part numbers for both wheels, buttons and airbag looms.

They haven't confirmed if they can definately do it, they want all the part numbers first because I suspect they'll want me to buy additional buttons and looms instead of programming what I already have.

And the Polo wheel fitted on that thread doesn't have ACC like our vans so isn't a direct comparison.

From what I can see, irrespective of the physical shape of the buttons, if all the buttons are labelled the same then they will work between wheels/vans.

If there's such a thing as a GTi wheel with a cancel button instead of a mode button then the swap should work, but in mine and @Dellmassive cases we both have adaptive and both have new wheels with differently labelled cancel/mode buttons so a straight swap isn't possible.

That makes some sense. So if I found a GTi MFSW wheel without cruise buttons it should work. And it must be a Polo wheel for red buttons. I think I might have more chance of finding some rocking horse poo.

I've added some pics of the connectors in the GTI MFSW i have above

EDIT : OOPS NO ACC on this set ! my bad.

This looks like the button set me and @Insert Coin have on our Mk7 GTI MFSW . . . .

@Insert Coin what MFSW did you van come with originally? can the button-pack from the stock MFSW be swapped over to the Mk7 one?

I've not stripped mine down yet.

Highline just like yours, pretty sure the button assembly is different, that would be the easiest thing to swap over but I don't think you can do it. The guys local to me seem to think it's pretty straight forward to swap that chip over, I've removed smd components before without issue, but it does seem a bit overkill if you could just plug a laptop in and reassign the buttons.

Golf 7 buttons are not compatible with the systems in a T6 (and they also have white buttons instead of red), the only ones that will work out the box is polo wheels but they seem quite rare.

Theres a guy on facebook in germany who does the conversions, you post him your mk7 wheel and he does something inside it to make it compatible with T6, not sure if hes swapping the chips or reprogramming it as you dont send your original to him ?

Wow, so this turned out to be a bit of a mission, I got there at 9 and left at 1, some days things just don't go to plan.

So there's a chip they remove from the old button set and it gets swapped to the new button set, the theory is that simple.

The practical side of things is quite tricky as the chip is surface mounted and with very fine pitched legs and it is nested amongst lots of other smd components that like to lift themselves off their pads when the solder station goes anywhere near them.

Eventually he managed to lift the chip off my wheel, pull the chip off the new wheel and plonk the original chip back down onto the new wheel and it worked ok, My GTi wheel had white led's but he screwed that set up, then he found a button set with red led's in the end so it worked out slightly better than I had hoped.

I got charged £90 for the chip swap, but sadly had to sacrifice my old wheel, I think they are looking at getting some blank pic chips and copying the code so no button sets need to be stripped off old parts, but right now they cannot do that.

awsome, so do all the buttons just work like before?

so now you have RED LEDS instead of the golf white ones?

So the MODE switch works as the CNL like normal?

Do the DSG Paddles work?

did they do the PIC chip in just one side of the buttons or both sides?

who are these guys so i can send them my one maybe?

Yes, I believe they are red led's now, because he managed to lift a couple of nearby components on my board as well as the main chip he needed, so he used a different button set and will rebuild my button pcb when he has more time.

Mode button is now cancel, but obviously labelled as mode, I use the cancel button as part of my Ghost sequence and it works exactly as before.

The company is BMW, Mercedes-Benz, VW & Audi Repair & Servicing in Dorset, Wiltshire, Hampshire and Somerset - Kartechnic and the owner is a guy called Kevin and he is the one doing the chip swaps, he's an old school electronics whizz.

Kartechnic fitted my B14's and ARB's, they are a good bunch and I'd have no trouble recommending them. They also built the T6R for Wessex Vans, I think it runs 450bhp or something silly and they have the same van there at the moment having the first 4-Motion components fitted to the TSi.

He says they are the only people in the UK making Mk7 GTi wheels work on T6's with ACC, I don't know how true that is?

Poole or Christchurch branch?
