mounting furniture to kombi seat points

has anyone got any experience mounting furniture to the kombi seat brackets? I'm looking to remove the single seat of the 2+1 to create space for a simple ply storage box. I was thinking of using u-bolts to anchor it down but want it to be as safe as possible when the kids are in the car. thanks!!

I think 8mm U bolts with a good steel spreader plate (you might have to fabricate these) inside the unit will hold anything down. I think the unit would disintegrate before the U bolts break free.

One thing to think about is a sideways impact with the unit, if it is at the side of a seat i.e. no sharp corners / edges. Could you apply foam padding? The normal sides of the van have a lot of hard surfaces - glass, door pillars etc so its just about mitigating anything sharp.

Thanks Ian, that's super helpful. The box would only be there during camping trips anyway and the majority of the time the single seat will be back in.
but better safe than sorry. I have an Ovano switch in the rear, which is already a heavy bit of kit, mounted to the floor points.

But some foam padding and soft edges would be a great addition.

Thanks,

Matt

I'm lucky I have a double slider, but it's only going to come out as far and as High as the double chair folded down..

Hi Matt, I’ve been thinking about making something similar to what you have described to house a compressor fridge. I also have the Ovano switch where I basically need to remove the single rear seat in any case as it doesn’t fold flat. Do you have any pictures of what you came up with?
Cheers

no Iain, no probs. I'll shoot something tonight. It was pretty simple in the end - cut down U bolts and a small rectangular plate to help pin everything down. Was a pig to line up as you can imagine! I made the box out of phenolic ply, so it ended up heavier than I would have liked.

When I made my motorcycle tie down plate, I used some bits of rectangle box section cut down with a slot in it to attach it to the existing seat mounts.

Hi Iain,

Did you manage to mount your compressor fridge? Getting my Ovano week after next and I want to do the exact same thing as you’ve described!

Thanks mate,
Sam

I’m considering something similar for the space where the middle seat would be, I’ve got a 1+1+1 setup. I’ll make it out of ply and use U bolts or J hooks to fix it to the seat brackets.

In my research I came across this table from van gear which might help visualise a possible fixing setup.

@samazon there is a setup with a fridge in one of the photos that might help you.

I’ll post pictures once I’ve made the unit

@PapaJay that’s hugely useful thank you mate, that bracket with the dometic is exactly what I’m after!

Thank you!

Hi Matt, I also have the exact same set up and keen for a solution. Are you able to send my any photos of the end result?
Thanks mate,
Sam
