Hi Everyone,

I'd like to introduce myself, it's highly likely I'm going to be asking many questions going forward.

My name is Andy and I'm currently in the market for a T6, although i have spotted a T28 with that has been converted that's caught my eye.

Apologies in advance, I'm completely new to the VW Camper/Van world with very little knowledge of which I'm hoping you guys can assist me through the exciting times ahead.

Many thanks.

Welcome along mate.

Feel free to put a link to any campervans that you like and we can have a look and offer any advice or let you know if anything jumps out.

Many on here prefer a t30 or T32 over the T28 because of the additional weight/load limit but there are ways around that if you did get a T28 (suspension specialist on this site)

Many Thanks and for the tip already.

The one that caught my eye is Facebook

I suspect i may need to pop this into another section on the forum?.

Many thanks for your help.

Looks a decent enough spec but id ask if it was a Highline or Startline. Does it have AC etc

MOT history looks good and backs up the mileage.

Many thanks Chris. I'll ask the question. I do know the van has no aircon. One slight concern was the 5 speed gearbox. I've not driven anything with 5 gears for years, back in the days of the 90's cars :D. T28 Image 7.png

Just bear in mind AC is difficult to add (if at all possible).........

The 5 speed box is ok, it does have some horror stories but everything does if you do enough digging. I'm sure there are many happy 5 speed owners on here.

Just remember its a buyers market so keep looking around

That's a Startline so missing some basic spec items such as Auto headlights, Auto Wipers & Aircon etc I believe.

I've got the 5-Speed box and it's mildly annoying on long motorway journeys but you get nearly 40 mpg with the standard 2ltr engine.

How much is it up for?

Hi Russ, The van is up for £32K, it has full dealership service etc.

I've really not got any idea on prices to be honest so not sure if that's a good deal or not. No AC would be a deal breaker for me but that's just me.

Don't discount buying your own van and converting. You could get a newer base van like this and then have 20k to convert.

Good luck with your search!

I suspect i will being doing a fair bit of motor way mileage, there is always a compromise the mpg sounds pretty good. Thanks.
It's easily possible to get 40+mpg on a motorway run from the 150PS engine on (even with a camper loaded to the gunwales and not driving like you've got Miss Daisy in the front passenger seat), so don't let that aspect influence your decision too much.

Sorry should have said I get about 40mpg running around town. Mine is the 108BHP I think
Thanks Russ, I'm pretty sure that's the same as the one I've been looking at. Everything looks great just the 5 speed box and no aircon is holding me off a little. But I've got to except compromise somewhere. To have everything I'd like would cost a fortune. I don't drive fast but having that but of power in reserve is nice.

I understand that searching for the right van at the right price is difficult and I agree that compromise is almost always needed somewhere, but I would respectfully suggest that options that are v difficult, v expensive and/or impossible to retro-fit (i.e. air con and a 5-speed box) are possibly not the right compromises. Perhaps by compromising on something that can be [relatively] easily retro-fitted, you can achieve your ideal van as/when funds allow.

Thank you Bav, that's certainly what i have been thinking about. It's a big investment and something i want to enjoy and not regret after owning for a few months. Thanks for your advice.

my advise would be to focus on the van underneath the camper. get the best van you can afford (leaving some change for conversions bits if needed) and the camper bits it may or may not have can always be added or amended as you go along.
Its not uncommon for lots of people using these vans for a few nights or even up to a week to not actually need much more in them than a simple bed, leisure battery and pod kitchen than full on fitted kitchen with all the bells and whistles.
the camper is only as good as the van underneath.

as others have said lots can be retrofitted such as seating, lights, wheels, suspension etc however fundementals such as AC gearbox and power can't. (well for most of us mortals, there are a few on here who have changed the lot)
good luck!

Thanks all for the kind comments so far, it's helping a huge amount.

I'm kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place with this. My wife who has little understanding of conversions a bit like myself wants a van that is complete.
Personally I'd like the same but happy to find the van and then build upwards, so I've hit a wall .

We are also thinking of finding something from a garage, that comes with some form of warranty. I know you pay that bit more but it's a little nervy spending a considerable amount of money without some form of guarantee.

I thought i'd found the perfect van, complete with aircon and many other pieces. Then spotted the 110bhp 5 speed part that i think lets it down.
Is the 5 speed really that bad, why do they even put this in the vans?. I'm thinking economy but wouldn't it be working harder on long trips?.

I know reading into these things can be a bit of a minefield, I've seen some detail that the 5 speed box is trouble some, but also seen some comments on the 6 .

Attached is a link to the van I've seen it's a 6.1 though, again is this a step in the wrong direction?.

2019 Volkswagen Transporter T28 TDI P/V Startline

Again apologies for all the uncertainty, i told you i would be pestering everyone.

Thanks again Andy.
