Newbie from Derbyshire!

Andy, the 5-speed is not a bad box per se - it will do the job perfectly adequately provided you're not looking to re-map the engine (there's anecdotal evidence that significant increases in torque can cause serious issues and this is probably what you've read about). The issue with a 5-speed is that the engine drones noisily at motorway speeds and this can be a source of fatigue on a long journey.

The van in that link isn’t a 6.1 it’s a T6.
Having said that it looks like a nice van and decent diesel heater, gas hob etc.
BUT the description write up is utter rubbish and not for that vehicle so I’d be a bit sceptical about their honesty, but may be a genuine mistake.
I guess it’s worth a look.
In fact, having just watched the video it looks a nice van. Blinds instead of curtains, new Autoterm comfort controller, what looks like the new cbe 12v control panel, proper gas locker, nicely trimmed rock n roll bed, scenic canvas etc.
I presume price reflects the mileage so a good service history is essential.

Thanks Russ, I'm pretty sure that's the same as the one I've been looking at. Everything looks great just the 5 speed box and no aircon is holding me off a little. But I've got to except compromise somewhere. To have everything I'd like would cost a fortune. I don't drive fast but having that but of power in reserve is nice.
Don’t compromise on the fundamentals, AC/engine/gearbox etc. Bling can be added afterwards. Many (and no disrespect intended) newbies get carried away with the conversion & ignore the basics. That’s the wrong way around imho.

I’d echo what @Salty Spuds says. And add that it’s also worth looking at the wheelbase. The extra 40cm of a LWB makes a big difference internally.

Depends how much you want/desire a tailgate, aircon and passenger captain seat. Doesn't appear to have these, but a very nice sportline style spoiler!!

Thanks all for the kind comments so far, it's helping a huge amount.

I'm kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place with this. My wife who has little understanding of conversions a bit like myself wants a van that is complete.
Personally I'd like the same but happy to find the van and then build upwards, so I've hit a wall .

We are also thinking of finding something from a garage, that comes with some form of warranty. I know you pay that bit more but it's a little nervy spending a considerable amount of money without some form of guarantee.

I thought i'd found the perfect van, complete with aircon and many other pieces. Then spotted the 110bhp 5 speed part that i think lets it down.
Is the 5 speed really that bad, why do they even put this in the vans?. I'm thinking economy but wouldn't it be working harder on long trips?.

I know reading into these things can be a bit of a minefield, I've seen some detail that the 5 speed box is trouble some, but also seen some comments on the 6 .

Attached is a link to the van I've seen it's a 6.1 though, again is this a step in the wrong direction?.

2019 Volkswagen Transporter T28 TDI P/V Startline

Again apologies for all the uncertainty, i told you i would be pestering everyone.

Thanks again Andy.
Nothing wrong with the 5-speed 102 / 110.

As long as you aren't expecting car performance.

Many thanks Chris. I'll ask the question. I do know the van has no aircon. One slight concern was the 5 speed gearbox. I've not driven anything with 5 gears for years, back in the days of the 90's cars :D. View attachment 253037
The lack of AIrcon would be an absolute dealbreaker for me tbh. Having toured extensively in southern Europe I'd regard it as an necessity rather than a luxury.

Same here! Having just been as far as Hungary and back, I think we'd have really suffered without aircon...that windscreen is huge and transfers so much heat.

The conversion does not look the best IMO.
Is this a gas canister for the hob ? Your main storage area has been used for fresh and waste water, and what looks like a ridiculous small gas canister. This could and should be planned out alot better.
And normally if I can see stuff like this just from the pictures, then we see many other conversion faults too.
It's easy to pick fault on other peoples work, but we have had 1 customer in tears after they have asked us to check over a conversion they have recently bought.

Thanks Brandon. In all honesty I'm not familiar with the Van. I was going to have a look at it over the weekend although i not so sure now with the feedback I've received. The van does look nice but without A/C and uncertainty over the 102bhp 5 speed box. I see your points though, very valid I'd need to take a closer look on that. Thanks for you input though it's great to have, things i certainly would not look for.

Just to clear up any confusion, I was commenting on the 19plate from PFF cars that you linked further down in the thread, not the one pictured initially.

Full service history from its AA days
Startline but has Air-Conditioning

Wolfbox Rear camera which is brilliant
Front runner rear ladder
Roof bars (I intended to fit a rigid solar panel to these)
17" Rogue Alloys CC3 in satin grey wrapped in General Grabber AT3's
230v EHU point (to the Clayton Power LPS Unit)

Interior
6x Spotlights
1x LED light strip
Van Furniture U-Shape system with upgraded pull out drawer
Van furniture locker cupboard
THQ Fridge
Sink with 16L onboard fresh water and 16L waste tank
Space for portable hob next to sink with sliding window
Ipad holder with USB mount
Kiravans curtains all round
A Class AMG front seats (passenger on swivel base with safe below)

The van is powered by a Clayton Power LPSII 1500 unit which is accompanied by the handy remote control and the alternator charging kit. Ideal for off grid camping! The unit can be hooked up to an onsite EHU via the external EHU point.

Condition
Its no pavement princess or show queen, this van has been used. There are bits of bodywork that aren't the best which I have photographed but this is reflected in the price. If the bodywork was mint, I'd be charging a lot more. If you want a piece of campervan life but don't have the huge budget, its ideal.

Many thanks Chris. I'll ask the question. I do know the van has no aircon. One slight concern was the 5 speed gearbox. I've not driven anything with 5 gears for years, back in the days of the 90's cars :D. View attachment 253037
Firstly, not sure if you've taken the plunge yet but welcome to the forum and money pit of owning a T6 :). We've had our T6.1 LWB 110ps T28 (5 speed) since January so by no means an expert. We got rid of a 18 plate Audi SQ5 to buy it and I was worried about the power and the joys of a 5 speed box, it's totally fine. You just have to accept it's not a car and not quick. Does 70mph on the motorway no problem and you can do a wee bit to negate the sound with seals and sound proofing in the doors relatively cheap. I read (from our converter) that our weight is around 2300-2400kgs ish with a full tank of fuel.

AC would be must for me too, even in Scotland on the 1 day of summer it's handy.

Hi All,

Thanks for your help on the van advice. I’ve managed to source a T28,. It’s a highline 150bhp, six speed with aircon. Having the skyline roof added.I’m hoping to collect on Friday. One thing I would like to change is the ride height it sits quite high with the 20inch alloys. I’m thinking 40mm, do you have any recommendations for this work? Many thanks.

Had mine lowered today by Steve at @CRS Performance , definitely worth a conversation with him.

I have a T28 101hp (5 speed) - not fast but keeps up with the traffic and I’m not in a hurry so fine with it and why I got a van.

The weight (as a camper) does cause a saggy back - which I belive can be fixed.

I have noticed coming from a car it gets hot inside with a big windscreen - so would go with A/C (I have it but not great in the back as designed to cool a smaller area due to bulkhead).

Ours was a purchase from the heart, given my time again I would read all comments and shop around.

That said still happy I took the plunge.
