Hello Peeps,

Does anyone know the answer to this question because the manufacturers have forgotten to put it in their manual, or is it supposed to be obvious :rolleyes:..........

I have just purchased NOCO Genius 10.

Please could you tell me if I can connect it to the main battery terminals (+ and -) while battery is connected to the van, or does the main battery have to be disconnected from the van before use? Manual does not say whether to disconnect battery before use.

Had to be jump started last week :mad:

You don’t need to remove or disconnect the battery but the charger should not be connected directly to the battery terminals

The positive terminal is fine but the negative should be connected to an earth point on the chassis (any good clean exposed metal part in the engine bay is fine as long as it connected to the engine or chassis)

Pauly, Thanks for that because I did it by connecting clips to + and - terminals. (Why would this most important point not be stipulated in manual :rolleyes: ).

So I could not find an earth point on the chassis that wasn't painted, no metal exposed, so I will have another look.

I wonder if the has been charged at all.

Connect the Noco charger to the battery POS terminal and the van chassis for the NEG.

It's not a NOCO thing.... It's a VW T6 thing. (That's why it's not in the NOCO manual)

You can go direct across the battery, no probs, and it will charge..... But what will happen is the van will no detect that the battery is charged.

This is due to the battery power sensor (shunt) that the van uses to detect the power in and out of the battery.

i used the headlight bracket bolt. . .

and yes the battery would have taken the charge if it was connected direct. . .

Thanks very much for that because I had a sneaky feeling something wasn't quite right because the green light on the NOCO should have been solid. It was slow-flashing (maintenance mode) after 5 hours, don't think the NOCO recognised the battery is charged.

I'll just have a read of the article now, thank you

And in the morning I will fervently attempt a re-play

Dellmassive Thank You I will seek out the headlight bracket bolt, and when the green light on NOCO goes unblinking green I will be able to use van again with confidence

Thank you for all the articles and info, I will read them

(I may need a new battery, it was 84% charged and 68% health when I took it in for a battery check after jump starting)

Hello again,

Well the man who jump started my van put the clamps on the positive and negative battery terminals (see photo), he was a qualified mechanic and he used a portable booster pack for source (not another car) .......was this wrong

So anyway peeps........I have looked.......but most parts under the hood are plastic or painted..........so could I put the negative clamp on to this bit here.........

The black part is plastic I think, but the bolt could be a good place for the neg?

Hold on what van is that?

That hasn't got a shunt on that battery!

So that s either a T5 /T5.1.

Or a very early T6 without stop start.


In either case its fine to go across the battery on that particular van.

I suppose the clue is in the name ...

You have a T5.1

So nothing to worry about.

Go direct to the battery
 
Hello Morning knowledgeable peeps @Dellmassive

It says VW Transporter 2.0TDi SWB (which I think is aT5)

(I did look in the manual prior to using the NOCO and I didn't see any mention of where to put the negative, so I copied the arrangement that the jump-starter man did).

So my van has no shunt.........the NOCO can go pos clamp to pos battery terminal and neg clamp to neg battery terminal.........yes?
 
Post a few pics of the front AMD side of the van...

The grill, repeater indicators and side mirrors will tell you what the van model is.

And no stop start is also a clue.

I don't think it has stop start.

The MOT certificate just says VW Transporter.

The grill, indicators. Mirrors... Say to me that is a VW T5.1 euro 5 with no stop start.
