The only place I know that does excursions that might include whales is Gairloch but you will find others if you google it

Many thanks, I did a google search and came up with the one at Gairlock, it looks good. Just wondering if any one had any personal experiences.

Looking forward to the midge battles going prepared though so won't let it spoil anything for us.

I have done the rib out to the Shiant Islands from Gairloch which was brill. A couple of whales spotted although not that close, and loads of dolphins playing around the the boat. IIRC there are more specific whale watching trips as well

For the midges, Smidge is the only thing that really works. That and any breeze over 4kmh

From Piston-Heads, any comments???????
We have not done the east coast. I believe its nice, with plenty of places to visit, but its the west coast that has the spectacular scenery and where we have spent a lot of time. Assynt and Torridon especially are special places. To make the most of them you need to get out and walk so take good boots and waterproof clothing. We are close enough to just about do these areas as a day trip, but we still take full week holidays there once or twice a year

A great resource for walks and other stuff is Walkhighlands Walkhighlands: Scotland walks and accommodation and it even has a couple of articles specifically on walks from the NC500.

Dunno that I'd agree.. Like all the scenery and roads that I've done in Scotland.. Did Lands end to Scotland (John O Groats) Via Irland on a Kawasaki ZX10 before now and back to Folkstone in a 10 day fun run... Last one being J O G, to Folkst in one afternoon/night.. Non stop

@Roadrunner , Afraid not, when I was there was using wet film.. :( If you google St Conans Kirk, you will find that it's a fair representation of the place though  I'm planning a return with digital, as will be cheaper on film costs.. Used to shoot reels of the stuff when up there :)

We are intending going late sept.
Any opinions whether to go clockwise or anti?
Cheers

We are planning anti clockwise that way we are doing the more potentially difficult but enjoyable driving and more rewarding sights whilst we are not so tired.

May not work out that way but will see in August.

Well done.
Have great trip.....post any advice during or after...esp if you have any "must do" recommendations.

I will certainly do that.
Just realised though I mean to state clock wise. That way we are doing the west coast first.
Sorry

@Gavin Cummings have you looked at the NC500 website. There are some interesting itineraries on there if you join, about £15 I think for the year.

We have ended up planning on doing a bit from most of the itineraries, whale watching, mountain biking, canyoning which sounds amazing. Also some great zip wires at Avimore on the way home.

Thanks for that.
I will certainly look up that info.
Sounds great.
Cheers

Some whale watching trips off Mull and from Portree on Skye....Sea Eagle trips from Ulva ferry on Mull...and trips out to Lhunga to see the Puffins too

Me again... re NW500?
Has anyone got some good campsite recommendations?
Or best places/beaches/views for spontaneous non campsite places to set up?
Assuming that you can still "bareback" camp?
