Oil Temperature

Mine is a 140hp 6 speed CAAC engine , LWB with a full camper conversion, so is generally quite heavy.
Temperatures in the high 20s or middle 30s dont seem to make much difference.

I see my T6 CFCA oil temps range between 105 to 120 Degrees, depends on the terrain and heat.

Sitting close to 3200kg GVM midroof LWB at 130km i'm getting close to 115 degrees while in the NT

Going up ranges i see up to 120 degrees, when in alpine regions.

I change my oil between the 15,000km services, so im not overly concerned.

You can get an oil cooler shipped over from the UK, as Darkside and Forge offer a kit.

Ok they all roughly are in the same figures, between 100 to 120 depending on how much work the motor is doing.
Thanks

Just out of curiosity what is your oil temperature when doing a long run at highway speeds.

Mine sits at around 101 degrees but will climb to 110 degrees if climbing a long hill or pushing into a strong headwind.
Then will drop back to around 101 degrees when the hill is over or out of the headwind.

This is in warm weather and is slightly lower in winter.
Just curious that's all.
Same on my BiTDI.

My Bitdi same as others at 98-101. Engine performs much smoother and power below 90. As soon as it gets to 101 and try for more power overtake etc, preheat lights flash on the dash, and stuck at whatever revs I was on. Stopping, switching off and restarting clears the problem. But no help on a Motorway. Will have a look at the suggestion of an oil cooler.

Would be better to have the van checked - defilnitely something is not right in the engine.

Its the middle of winter here in Adelaide Australia and todays temperature was about 19 degrees which is a bit above average, typical winter day is about 14 to 17 degrees. I can't imagine -30 degrees but I guess you know how to dress and live in that environment. Amazing to us.

So checked out the oil cooler, and prices start at £350 plus fitting, looks like the front off, the same as the EGR valve. So that is at least double.
So back to the test drives, and lights on, no matter what the temperature.

Apologies to bump an old topic..

I’m concerned about my oil temp and looking for reassurance I guess.

I have a t5.1 bitdi,,, cfca engine.
How warm is too warm for the oil?
If i do 60+mph I see above 115 degrees and same if climbing ( scotlands hilly ) I’ll see 120+

This too warm?
Tia

It might be a bit high, but check that the oil level is correct, ensure using the correct oil and its been changed as per the service schedule, and check there are no obstructions to the airflow into the engine compartment (leaves or other debris blocking the intercooler/radiator, additional bumper or grill mounted lights etc)

Castrol Edge has a flash point of around 200 deg C depending on the grade.
I regularly see oil temperatures of up to 118 deg C on my CFCA, depending on engine load with an ambient of 28 deg C.
As the CFCA oil cooler is combined with the oil filter / EGR cooler the limiting factor on cooling is probably how much cooling water that tiny electric pump can circulate.
Ultimately I suspect that the cooling water will be overheated before the oil unless that electric circulating pump fails.
I’m unsure if there is a warning on the dash for high oil temperature, I’d like to think so but it wouldn’t be a great shock to find there isn’t. I always drive with the MFD displaying oil temperature.

I am driving now the BTDI 204, engine DMZA.
Running temperature is around 100. Cruising fast 110mph in Germany I have seen 110. Temperature outside 13 Celsius.

Nice to know its not just me!
I always thought it would be nice if they had a dial for oil temp along with the water temp on the dash.

Here's few examples of my CXEB/204 in numeric format. Varying ambient temperatures but otherwise pretty random picks - different routes etc.

Nothing too special, just shows ambient temperature doesn't really affect the maximum oil temperature - the maximums are more dependent on engine load.
