Ply Floor - Glue Or Screw

How much 9mm ply is needed for the batons - a full size sheet?
EDIT: I'm needing to get kombi seats out, floor down and RIB in with the van out of action for child transportation for as little time as possible.

you wont need a full sheet but a half sheet may be too small, depending on where you place the spacers. We use 6mm not 9mm.

"We use 6mm not 9mm."
Thanks @Eclipse Campers. You said you glue both batons and floor though? I'm using a layer of insulation (5mm gold stuff from Harrisons), so would be screwing. Guess I could use 20mm screws. Does 9mm sit proud of the floor ridges? Happy to save whatever floor depth I can. Do you not insulate then if glueing?
Also, if I glued the 12mm floor, would you use Sikaflex or something that is applied with a tilers spreading 'comb'?
Thanks

we dont insulate unless asked for. You will need thicker battens if insulation. We never screw. Sikaflex vit V nozzle, not comb. We can supply you a one piece CNC cut floor if required.

Cheers,
Ian:thumbsup::thumbsup:

This is how I did it

1. Glue Batons
2. sound deadening
3. insulation 6mm hard sheeting
4. 12mm ply sheeting fixed to rails with Countersunk M8 threaded, which I know is not what your doing,

however, there is no right or wrong way, I did this way due to running cables and possibly need access again in the future...

good luck with your build:thumbsup:

Cheers Ian, I have the 12mm floor already. I'm going to go for minimal thickness, so 6mm batons, 5mm gold foam insulation then screwed down with 20mm screws. I reckon it will compress the insulation over the metal ridges, saving a few mm and be pretty solid. RIB will be bolted through the rear section anyway, so it's not going anywhere. Not after thermal insulation really, but reducing noise would be good. Put some material savings towards an Eton speaker upgrade, which will drown any squeaks :thumbsup:

Yep that should be ok, we are Eton dealers also :) :)

How did this go? We are doing something similar and wondering whether we should cut squares of the harrison trim gold matting to go between the batons, or just put it under or over the batons in one piece?

What was the 6mm sheet insulation you used @Kramsdog ?
Is that the dark grey stuff in the pic?

I have glued 9mm batons to the floor of my van.

I now need to put the 12mm ply floor down.
I was planning on screws, but 2 converters I spoke to both recommended sikaflex and said the never screw the floor down.

Looking for peoples opinions on this.

Thanks
Did you glue it down after?

We would always glue the ply floor to the battens and the metal ridges in the van as we consider this to be the foundations of the conversion, seating etc. The glue prevents noises and movement. If the floor moves and you have a join in it, this will show through into the floor covering. We always make a one piece CNC cut floor anyway so that helps.

The glue also helps to take out any variances in the sub floor level.

You can obviously screw if you wish but considering f you have any issues in the floor later – EVERTTHING – needs to be removed from the van to sort out. Not a fun prospect.

There is no right and wrong as such until you have a problem. Good luck

Do you insulate the metal flooring first with Dodo? Then glue on top of Dodo matting then plywood.

If insulation is being used on metal flooring then surely 6mm batons in between ridges should be used otherwise insulation on top of 9mm batons would be too high if you have sliding seat rails.

I'm still researching the process as I am looking to lay 12mm ply with Altro on top.

The way I see it I will buy pre cut 12mm ply.
Cut it in 3 parts. As you'll see why in photo.

Glue 6mm batons and insulate over batons. Glue Altro to 12mm ply then glue to batons and ridges. Hopefully I can do this with seat still in place.

No because of floor ridges, and glue thickness. We now supply one piece ply floors with the packers already fitted, ship UK wide
I have just posted another message on my plan. I'll look up your website. I'd rather a professional do this incase I get the thickness of glue etc wrong. I plan to Dodo insulate. A few Dodo sound deadening mats first.

Check out my photos. Looking to have flooring put on. I agree with you not to screw it down but from videos I have watched they have a special gun and it's a knack which comes with experience.

Track seats are different, not sure what seat you have there but if they are Unwin rails it's likely they are fitted after the floor as they overlap the floor. Can't quite tell from the image. Tracks we fit are taller and give enough space for insulation etc if needed
