Pop-top fit cost

Know
We have had our austops poptop for about 5 years now, the black gel coat is suffering a bit as I didn’t maintain it in anyway apart from standard van wash but working on bringing it back now. I had planned to wash and then reproof the canvas but it’s actually not that dirty so this may wait until next season (doesn’t need reproofing either will only need that if I clean it). So it’s lasted pretty well so far despite my best efforts.

For me without a poptop it’s just a van not a campervan, I don’t like being in the back when it’s down but when I do go in I shuffle about on my knees, so is this how those people without a top to pop live? The roof up transforms the space in my view
I still enjoy my “very much a campervan “ without the poptop. I’m not paying someone £5k to fit a bit of fibreglass and tent material. As I’m keeping my campervan for many years to come, I’m happy enough

Jim, I'm pleased you're happy with your set-up, and I wouldn't try to change your mind or have the temerity to tell you that you've made the wrong choice, but you don't need to use such pejorative language to describe other options in order to make your point.

The £5k (+/- £2k TBH) not only buys "a bit of fibreglass and tent material", it also buys the comfort of being able to stand upright in the van (priceless, IMO) and it converts a 2-berth van into a 4-berth van without the need to lug around a large bundle of tent material, string and fiberglass poles that are a PITA to erect and pack away on a daily basis when you're touring (pejorative language used only for effect ;)).

My only concern is how do two 65 year olds get into the pop top to sleep and at our age a toilet break at 4 in the morning is a must lol .

Yeah, for most, the pop top is usually the preserve of kids, though it is where me & Mrs Bav (two young-at-heart late-quinquagenarians) prefer to sleep.

There was no intention to be disparaging. I was looking for a few other synonyms to look intellectual. It seems to me that the cost for installing pop tops is very high for what they are. Material costs are on average circa £1500, I would guess and with roughly two days to install the majority of the cost is labour £1000’s. Think I should be able to have an opinion :) no offence intended

I'm as thick-skinned as they come Jim, so absolutely no offence taken by me and, of course, you can express your opinions - I'm quite opiniated myself.

I do, though, try not to express my opinions in terms of negativity towards counter-views or alternative options and, despite sometimes falling short myself in this regard, I do (as above) encourage others to do likewise. The harmony on this forum is hard-won and could be easily lost.

Someone expresses the opinion that a campervan with a pop-top is not a campervan and I voiced my opinion "tongue in cheek" on the what I consider to be an unrealistic cost, like many other things post-covid, to retrofit same . No personal attack on anyone given or intended. Let's leave it at that please. Harmony restored? ;)

Like I said “for me” a campervan without a poptop roof is not a campervan and therefore it has value to me beyond what I paid (albeit not the most expensive roof by a long way), I didn’t mean to imply that no other choice is valid, people who stealth camp I assume see little value in them for example, we don’t so that doesn’t figure in my personal opinion.

Not sure where I stand on high tops ;)

High tops could be classed as campervans I think.
I'm going to fit a Dometic skylight pop-up vent soon. It will give me 400mm square hole and it will pop-up and I should be able to get my head through it. ;) ;). It will shine some extra light on my seat/bed and on the Induction cooktop. Seat/bed build In progress below.
Will be very comfortable once I get the cushions and pillows

Is that a campervan bed? :slow rofl:

Joking! Looks great!

I dont want a pop top when we convert ours nor do we plan to cook in the van. We’re used to camping and just want a warm dry comfy bed that doesnt deflate!

We’ll have a fly sheet awning for single night stop overs and a driveaway awning tent for longer stays.
