Power-Latching Tailgate weird issue

Mine had an intermittent similar problem some time ago then was fine for months, Saturday morning the problem as resurfaced, tailgate powers up and down but will not power closed, tried resetting the tailgate several times but it wont have it. trip to the steelers needed.

My 2018 has also stopped working, about a month ago it started to make funny noises only stopping when the tailgate was reopened and shut again.
Will add it to the list for when it goes in next few weeks.

The power latching has stopped working and the tailgate rattles
Has anyone had similar or know of a solution please

Hi
2018 T6 Campervan conversion

I have had Power latching installed for both the sliding, & tailgate.

Sliding door works fine, but the Tailgate has to be slammed for the tailgate to close properly.

If i try the "soft close", i hear the motor, & it locks, but shut lines show tailgate is proud, & there is a gap at the bottom of the tailgate(viewed from the inside), but the dash display says door is closed.

After slamming, the Shut line for the NSL of tailgate is fine, but the OSR shut line shows it a couple of mm pulled in.

Surely soft closing means that you close the door to almost closed, & then push the door, & the power latch should do the rest. Am i right?

Regards

Hi
Thanks for the reply.
Is this the strike plate?
If it is, i have noticed that sometimes the upright bit between the two screws does not come all the way out
when the tailgate is open. is that right?

That’s the strike plate. The upright should “rotate” in and out. The out position with the tailgate open.
If the shut line is out then mark the current position with felt pen. Slacken the 2 screws then adjust in / out to suit. Tighten back up and retry...
Otherwise take it back to the converter to sort

Hi Wills
Trying to get as much info before taking back to installer.
If the upright is not coming out all the way, does that mean there is something wrong with the mechanism. Is there some sort of electronic switch?
Regards

Hi
I am a bit of a newbie, so trying to get info.
Can someone please explain what a VW OEM parts is please.
I have been assured by converter that they only use OEM parts.
I have just come off the phone to VW, an they tell me they do not supply power latching kits.
Regards

OEM > original equipment manufacturer. The parts will be VW originals but the additional wiring loom required will be 3rd party as VW don’t supply retro kits.
You can either try adjusting the strike plate or go back to the converter...
Your converter is correct apart from the loom.... Did you explain your issue to them? What response?

Thanks for explaining OEM.
Will adjusting the strike plate mean that the upright will come out when the tailgate is open? Along with correcting the shut lines.
Regards

Yes, when you open the tail, you’ll hear the motor and the upright will turn through 180*. This movement enables the upright to move outwards.
When you close the tail it engages the upright which will then spin the opposite way and pull the tail fully closed.
If you mark the strike plate’s current position with paper tape then you can adjust it inwards by a few mil.... See how the tail position is when fully closed and adjust accordingly.
However, if the installation is faulty and you mess around trying to resolve it, the converter may attempt to blame you and refuse to resolve.....Beware!

Thanks very much for a very detailed explanation .
I will definitely be returning to the converter to get this sorted.
Regards

Reading back through this thread it does sound like your rear latch motor could be faulty, it should al aye travel the full distance and should only ever be fully open or fully closed, there is no mod position

I have been to the converters, & to get the upright bit on the strike plate to fully open, they had to keep pressing the Black release button (see photo) with the tailgate open, & that would eventually cause the upright bit on the strike plate to fully open.
Then the tailgate could be closed, with the latch hitting the strike plate upright bit, the motor would sound, & the tailgate would softley close. But the tailgate would not close all the way, because there would be a gap at the bottom of the tailgate(Viewed from inside the Van, but showing closed on the dash).
The only way to get it to close fully, would be to slam the tailgate, with the upright bit fully open. But then the shut line was a couple of mm to far in on the O/S. plus there would not be any soft close.

Hope i have made my self clear.
the converters are having the van back in again next week, to try & sort the problem.
Given this information, does this mean the latch motor is the culprit?

Regards.

Part of what kit ?
Is this one of my power latching kits that has been fitted to your van or has your convertor sourced one and fitted it for you ?
