Question about the max weight limits for jacks and stands

I need to get under the van to check out possible rat damage. I've read most of the posts regarding decent jacks and axle stands, but I'm left a bit confused. A lot of members seem to use or be recommending 2.5 Ton jacks or stands. As my van is a T28 I would have thought that the minimum requirements would be a 3 ton jack/stands. Am I missing something here? Why are so many people using 2.5 Ton jacks when their vans are heavier than the jack's weight limit?

A single jack stand won't be supporting the entire weight of the van...unless youre very good at balancing!

Regardless of the load rating the vans are in the region of 1950-2100kg total mass, so fully supported with 4 stands each stand would have to support about 500kg. Actually a little more at the front, a little less at the rear, but all well within the capacity of a 2.5 tonne stand.

Thanks Sas. That makes sense. So no need to lash out the extra for the 3 Ton versions then. I like that.

I use the 3Ton versions.

But as above, when you jack up the van you are only lifting up to half the weight.

The axle plate under the bonnet shows the max axle weight expected.

And don't forget, never get under the van using a jack alone.. make sure it's well supported with 2-4 axle stands and wheel chocks, and leave the jack in place unloaded as a safety backup.
