RAC Vehicle History Complaint - Audi/VW VIN Decoder

“Care in the Community” invariably fails when the patients/customers/subjects (delete according to political persuasion!) don’t take their medication!!!

I suspect that the report contains duff into. This is disheartening when so many rely on such reports when making expensive purchases. Worse, these reports (particularly the online variants) seem to just scalp and collate freely available data. Gone are the days when they’d rock up, kick the tyres, rummage under the bonnet, whistle through their teeth and finally give an opinion.

I also suspect you’re being given a runaround. I can only reiterate that going to a dealer is your best option. Alternatively, secure an advocate to represent you as you’re doing bit of crap job so far!!! You’re going up against a £multi-million company who need to bring this matter to a close quickly - they just may not have twigged that yet - particularly if this were to go beyond “I want my money back!”

Hi Nodecetral

The build sheet covers a lot of stuff probably around 200 things.

There is an example on this forum:

It is really useful to have for all sorts of things (not just for the RAC issue).

The RAC site says they do not guarantee the accuracy of the data they provide, so probably at best you will get a refund. There looks to be some kind of HPI guarantee (up to £30,000) but suspect you would lose that if you got a refund so a risk.

VIP membership is great - loads of extra content and helps support the work of the site.

This is a bit of a painful read.

I think any advice from here on out might be a bit limited for 2 reasons.

Firstly you seem too tight to follow the advise given to just spend the £13 on a VIP membership to give you the information you want but also to support the community you are asking help from. If nothing else £13 for peace of mind is just a no brainer and seems absolutely wild to me that you would haven't done that then first suggested.

Secondly having worked in customer service before, when you are the customer you have to put yourself in the shoes of the person dealing with your question/complaint. You need to give clear next steps as to what you want and what you want the next steps to be. Yeah it sucks you might have gotten bad info but sadly in life mistake happen. Create a path for both you and them to move forward.

At this point having read your thread I'm at a loss as to what you want next? Do you want your £15 back? Do you want RAC to admit they are wrong? Then what you going to sue them? I'm fairly sure their t&'s will be bullet proof for this kind of situation.

If your plan is to just keep on at them and in time get some kind of moral victory you might be in for a shock as someone who has brought a £15 and isn't happy is about as low importance as it get for them.

Hi @soldas..

How does your perception of me being ‘tight’ have any relevance to the predicament ? - no one is disagreeing with you that paying £12 is a potential solution. But, nothing here is time critical.. My goal here has only ever been to understand how best to reply back to RAC and give them my decoded VIN.

A build sheet has been proposed and that makes sense. As to when I sign up to this forum’s VIP to get it is for me to decide. (Remember £15 paid and £12 now being asked for, with no guarantee of any money back) - is this forum and VIP the only route to get a build sheet or VIN officially decoded..

Also, everything today has an annual subscription, choosing what you commit to and when you commit is not about being tight. You have no idea what other commitments or priorities I have,

This thread has gained a bit of life it seems due to the perceived order events happened and how other people would do things - which is ok, that’s the value of communities like these..

Also, asking this forum/community, and paying the community for help/guidance - have never been positioned to me as mutually exclusive. The VIP has value I can see that, and will look to use it later - but did not see it as required straight off.

Final thought, sh*t happens, we all make mistakes and/or things don’t turn out as we hoped - hence it really helps when people read and contribute (on any forum, not just this one), with a little empathy.

As mentioned in an earlier post - I don’t know where this will go, I’m still at the first hurdle - RAC have asked me to prove that the data they sold me is wrong. They don’t care about me, that’s clear - as for any moral victory, yes perhaps. Sure, some people can just write it off, I could - I just choose not to :) - I’m obviously not going to sue, but hey £15 back, to cover this forum’s VIP Membership is no bad thing ;)

My point being, you have asked for advice on how to progress your situation. You have been given that advice but you seem to be after something else.

As I say, paying £13 for VIP to gain a built sheet and I guess more to the point peace of mind on what you have actually brought feels like an absolute no brainer to me.

By hey, different stroke for different folks and all that.

Good luck on your quest.

Thanks @soldas - appreciate that.

I’m not after anything else, i only ever wanted advice on the ways I could get my VIN officially** decoded

** well to a level that RAC would accept. I have emailed them to see if they would except a ‘build sheet’ but not heard back yet - i was hoping for an example to share too.

VIP membership came up as part of that, and kind of took over the conversation.. :)

Many thanks @Paul Sussex, that helps a lot, and puts the value of the Build Sheet into perspective much more for me..

Being new to all this, I was thinking it was going to be relatively basic, more a birth certificate or a list of codes, it also wasn’t clear to me from the VIP promo page (VIP Membership) that such a comprehensive build document was an option etc. Thanks again (sheet you linked to added below for reference)..

Just to clarify a few points

Yes, i need to add the build sheet as a benefit to the VIP membership page

VIP membership is not, and will never be, a requirement to get help from the forum. Whilst i am not against encouraging it for the benefit of the forum it does seem a little 'hard sell' here

Finally, VIP membership is a subscription that renews annually but can be cancelled at any time (even immediately after signing up) and 12 months access is still granted

Other than this thread being about getting a few quid back from some duff information, having read through, I see two benefits from nodecentral’s post. Firstly it may prevent another reader from falling into the same trap of thinking that an RAC report has any value and secondly high-lighting the benefits that joining the VIP membership may bring. Win - win for the forum .
