Re-build?

Was driving our 2016 Caravelle last week when it lost all drive, along with pretty awful grinding noises. It's now with a (UK) specialist who've inspected, and estimate £5K to put right: gearbox out, dismantled, re-build, dual mass, test. This really isnt what I need. Any thoughts/ alternative options? Other than just get rid, which I how I feel right now.

Problem is if you try to sell it while it knackered you're liable to take much more than a 5k hit on it value, so it's likely to be less expensive to fix it before punting it onwards.

DSG? Manual?

So the 5k is remove, repair, refit the gearbox.. plus a new dmf.?

Sounds like you need a 2nd opinion, or at least share this info with them before committing to anything.
By the sounds of it in the video it will happen to all of us eventually which is a worry once mileage creeps up

If you suddenly loose drive with a horrid grinding noise on any T5, T5.1 T6 & T6.1 transporter, 5sp, 6 sp auto or DSG it's nearly always the offside driveshaft splines have worn out and stripped.
The ONLY way to diagnose this, is to actually remove the driveshaft - a quick inspection is useless, and this needs to be done before any new gearboxes are prescribed!

So just like the good video above, right? Which is not a total rebuild/new box.

Yes, remove driveshaft to diagnose (1/2 hour job) Then, on any other transmission replace driveshaft and stub shaft, but on the DSG, remove and split the gearbox to replace the differential side gear, and of course replace the driveshaft.
