Rear view mirror wiring.

As for drilling the lens then yeah exactly where you marked it. There's just enough space at the side of the internal LED board to get the wire past. EDIT: I removed the lens and dismantled it before drilling. Once it's off you'll see better if it's doable but I'm not sure if the tailgate version is as easy to remove and replace. I'm sure I've read somewhere here that the tailgate version breaks on removal.
Thanks @Howzat . It worked out fine.

To anyone who wants to give this a try:

Drill slowly and gently. If you go too fast the plastic melts and grips the flutes of the drill.
I drilled a pilot hole of 1.5 mm, then opened up slowly in 2mm increments. With hindsight it might have been better to go in slowly at the final diameter with a brand new drill. The connector at the end of the camera cable is about 6.6 mm diameter. By the time I'd got the hole to 5.5 mm I could feel the drill bit 'catching'. The lens plastic is quite brittle so I opened up the last mm with a rat-tail file. I also shaved the connector a bit with a new Stanley knife blade.

I needed access to the connector from the inside so drilled a hole with a stepper drill:

From here I can feed the cable through to the rear left pillar. Will post new pics when that is done. Didn't finish today as new VW carbon spoiler bling arrived.

Best Wishes,

Mike

Just done mine with an AutoVox v5 pro OEM jobby. You lose the main bean assist like Pauly mentions as the sensor is in the original mirror but you don't lose auto wipers. In return you get a reverse camera and front facing dash cam camera that records while driving and while parked if it senses movement. I've mounted my rear camera on the high brake light so I get a cracking rear view while driving and because it's a 170 degree camera it can practically see around corners when I'm reversing. I didn't drill any holes in the bodywork. I drilled the lens instead and fed the wire through there. I had to wait for them to send me an OEM mount for the mirror which tool 4 weeks but well worth the wait because it's cast exactly the same as the OEM mount so I was able to refit the plastic trim around the mirror which makes it look truly OEM with all the wires hidden. It's also cheaper than the OEM retrofit camera to the headunit but provides way more features.
They also sent me 2 mini fuse taps and an extension lead (because I had to route down the barn door, through the rubber ducting to the inside of the van then back up to the roof to run it to the front but then found it was about 3-4 meters too short) FOC. It's a brilliant bit of kit and great service via Amazon and worth every penny when you add up all the additional bits they've sent. Quality seems great so I'm hopeful it'll last a few years too. Massive  from me
Hi @Howzat or anyone else who has fitted the AutoVox v5 Pro
which fuse did you plug into for the yellow and red wires for the percent live and switch live

thanks

Yellow goes to the reverse wire coming out of the rear light cluster. Red to a piggy back fuse in the cab fuse box.

Sure. First off this is the windscreen mounting with the OEM mirror removed. You can see the auto wipe sensor is still plugged in.

Then we have the mirror mount from the OEM mirror which twists onto the windscreen mount. You can also
see the plug for the headlight sensor.

The mount they sent me is the whole thing. ie balljoint, arm and casting, not just the plate you see with the 2 screws.

So that's the before pictures and here's what it looks like with the autovox fitted. I've got a bulkhead behind my seats so the view in the mirror is coming from the rear camera.

So yeah, I think you'll agree, pretty sweet eh? :D
3 years on do you still have your van with mirror upgrade? It looks great. Wires behind plastic shroud? I'm looking at Wolfbox G900Pro. So you got in contact with someone for a bracket that replaces factory bracket that fixes factory mirror to windscreen for one that fixes new mirror to factory window?

Sent from China? I've a 2023 T6.1 and yours looks the same as mine. Sensor connections all in that shroud.

I do and it's been one of the best mods on my van mainly because I still have the bulkhead in but it's also provided evidence for 2 claims where I was hit by a third party.
Purchased on Amazon then contacted the seller to request the OEM bracket. I also requested compatible fuse taps (they supply mini's) and an extension for the rear cam and everything was sent at no extra charge. Really can't fault them and the quality is spot on. Still working great with the same 128GB SD card I purchased at the time.

I appreciate the response. I'll look into this

I just thought. If you swap both mirrors around using OEM bracket aren't you losing something in factory housing ie sensors or whatever functions between the windscreen housing and factory mirror?

Wolfbox just got back to me ref bracket to replace factory one that enables the wolfbox mirror to attach. They say they don't have one for 2023 T6.1.
Do you have the same model as me? I'm not sure where to source one.
Also, isn't the shroud attached to windscreen contains just the feed mirror auto dimmer and nothing else. Surely it can't be linked to auto beam

I dont have a wolfbox. I have the Autovox Pro V5.
I think the OEM mirror has a lens on the back and a circuit board inside that is for the high beam assist but I didn't use it anyway so was no loss when I swapped.

I understand now. I don't think Wolfbox has a substitute bracket then. Would you have the link where you purchased yours? Cheers.

From Amazon

Cheaper now than when I paid. With the 10% voucher about £177 BUT you may have to purchase the rear camera extension now if you needed that which is an extra £10 but no harm in asking them via messaging. They may or may not send that for free but they WILL send the OEM mount for free. No asky no gety.

Just been having a look at the wolfbox which I'm sure is a great product, and in some respects may be better than the V5, but seems to fall short on a couple of areas imo.
1. No hardwire kit is included like the V5 does. That's an extra £25.
2. It's just not quite as OEM looking as the V5 and as mentioned in another thread you have to butcher the wolfbox mount AND your OEM mount to get it to work, so no going back to the OEM mirror if you go down this route.
You may also still need the rear camera extension like i did with the V5 so factor in another £10.

I appreciate your responses. The V5 probably the way to go then as you can get the connector so replacing the entire mirror rather than strapping it to the factory mirror. I think you retain all the sensors. The one sensor would be the auto dimmer of factory mirror which isn't a problem if you're swapping mirrors.

I will take a look inside the housing first.

The V5 isn't 4k? Its 1080? The rear is?? I need to look again. The Wolfbox is 4k front 2.5k rear. Apparently there's no OEM attachment for Wolfbox. I don't want to strap it to factory mirror.
I'm wondering if there's a 4k with OEM attachment. I'll have to contact them.

I just had a Alpine Halo 11" with subwoofer/amp installed. Mind blowing. Alpine speakers in doors were added few months ago. A money pit this can lol

Looked on Amazon. Would you know what mount it is in this photo? I think it's same as yours. T6.1

I wrote a review on how to butcher the Wolfbox mount and the OEM mount. I was also hesitant in case I needed to go back to a standard mirror. I looked up used mirrors on eBay and they were only £30 so figured worst case scenarios was I was £30 down.
For my swb barn door model, I didn’t need an extension cable.

Wolfbox just replied to my email and they don't make OEM mounts unlike V5
