Roof wrap for solar panel- whole roof or panel coverage?

Hold up o_O on the non-poptop+tailgate t6, are we saying there are grommets you can use to pass solar cable inside keeping the roof from having new holes?
On barn door versions, there are grommets covering the tailgate fixing points.

I drilled a hole, but at least it is inside the pop top canvas so it isn't liable to let water in.

Looking for advice on what I've done wrong as have fitted my semi flexible panel down on Sunday however have checked today and it has not bonded properly to the vinyl and has peeled up which took a little bit of effort but was expecting it to be stuck fast. This is what I did:

1. Applied vinyl to roof. This stuff in gloss black to match colour of pop top. Gloss Black | GM001F

2. Applied Sikaflex 252 structural adhesive to the three ridged high points on my pop top. The Sikaflex was an absolute pig to get out of the tube and could only get it to come out very slowly without the nozzle on despite warming the tubes in hot water.

3. Stuck panel down onto roof. The plan was to then seal the edges with Sikaflex also however there was no way I was going to be able to use the nozzle as could only get it out in blobs at a time.

4. Then left it to set until today with the intention to stick the edges with a different more workable adhesive however when testing the bond it has peeled away from the vinyl but stuck to the panel.

So what have I done wrong? Should it have been a different non gloss vinyl? Should I have keyed the vinyl?

Now need to try and get this mess off the panel.

Only thing I can think is people use ppf not wrap material …. Don’t seal the rear edge btw so air can travel up under the panel to cool it

No idea not that I put on it. It had a thin layer that peeled off once it was stuck down.

It sounds like your sikaflex was old or out of date, I had no issues squeezing it out of a cut nozzle, it should come out the same consistency as silicone.

Absolutely better to put the vinyl on, the paintwork underneath was untouched, and the new vinyl is on as I write.
Where did you get your vinyl from please? Also was it very difficult yo apply without getting bubbles underneath?

I am wondering if just to put the vinyl on the ridges of the roof, as thats the only place the sikaflex would go. Is that a bad idea?

I got it off ebay, 3M 1080 vinyl, has little channels set in the adhesive to allow the air to be squeegeed out. once you are happy, heat to e defined temperature to set the adhesive. I used little lengths of 30mm or so tube to sit in the channels to support the panel, glued with sikaflex top and bottom.

Slightly off topic but I’m thinking of getting my pop top vinyl wrapped as it’s suffering a Iot from weathering etc. I currently have a panel stuck to the roof, so do people think it would work to take the panel off wrap the roof then reattach the panel back to the wrap or as it’s stuck on already and has been for 5 years cut the wrap round the panel?

They would wrap over the whole roof then cut out the solar panel afterwards.

Yeah this was the plan just wondering if it could be possible to get it off without damaging it
If you mean peel the wrap off the solar panel after it's been trimmed... Then yes no problem, it will peel off fine.... They will do all that for you.

No, I meant get the panel off the roof without damaging it then wrap under it but I’m not sure why now.

I reckon you'll knacker the flexy panel if you try to peel it off but given the panel is five years old you're probably on borrowed time with it already.
That said and the pop top weathering being the bigger issue I reckon you're going to have to try and remove the flexy panel, get the whole roof wrapped and hope that you didn't lose your rag with the panel and there's enough of it left in one piece to reinstall.
If it helps I've just been T Cutting my roof and rewaxing it this week and looking at my stuck on solar panels I reckon I might as well have used Blutak or drawing pins, I know one of them's going to make another bid for freedom this summer.
