Rusty Door Seals

Hi All, following a number of searches on here I can't seem to find anyone that has replaced a door seal themselves on the driver or passenger doors.

We have a rusty seal on the drivers side, but it is out of warranty so the dealer is not playing ball, on all my other vehicles it has been a simple pull off push on job by this seems to be more involved.

Any guidance or pcitures would be well appreciated.

Also looking at these as a replacement, does anyone have any experience? T6/T6.1 Side Door Seal For Front Door - Drivers Side - Vee Dub Transporters

Thanks,

Chris

Interested if you did this or how it went? Looking to replace my own door seals and don't want to bite off more than I can chew!

It's really, simple. Take off the cover on the end of the dash, the grab handle, A pillar cover and sunglasses holder, loosen the step cover and you'll be able to pull the old one off, being carefull not to damage the inside trim. The new one pushes on, then make sure the inside trim is set right and re-fit the handles and covers. 20 minutes for each door. You do need hex screwdriver for the bits.

The seal itself is just held on by friction, you have to but it to match the length of the exisiting as they are normally supplied long, but should be an easy job.

Don't think try to leave the sunglasses holder on like I did or you'll bend the interior trim (this was my error, don;t make the same mistake or you'll be kicking yourself).

Good luck

This is great to read. My bus is going in for a service at Listers on Wednesday, and they quoted £477 to replace both driver and passenger seals....

Apparently, there is extensive work required (panel removal) to complete the job.
I'll caveat this with I did bend my headliner... but that was due to not removing the sunglasses case because I was trying to cut a corner........

But what a load of horse. The seals (of which the oem ones will fail again due to design) are £35, they want £400 to remove the A pillar trim, 3 handles, sunglass case and the end trim from the dash.... (about 10 screws and 15 minutes work).

That is marvellous news! Now I know I can do it myself I can buy them and leave them in the garage for a few months before doing it...

You said the OEM ones will fail because of the design? I've seen the OEM ones for ~£90 a door, but repro ones for ~£35. Is it worth just going for the reproduction ones, but installing the upgrade seal that fits to the door?

This job has just been added to my to-do list now after finding mine have gone rusty when doing other jobs yesterday. I’m going to go for the repro ones, even at a third of the price they can’t be any worse than the OEM ones.

Just following that link I notice they do full packages for all doors. Do the sliding door and tailgate seals suffer from the same rusting problem?

It seems to be atraffic issue. i.e. where the seal is being stood on repeatedly, I haven't seen it on the rear or sliding doors, or even my passenger door as that doesn;t get used anywhere near as much.

So where it's being stood on the hard metal in the seal evetually breaks the rubber and then gets wet for wet shoes etc which is why it rusts. It either needs a rust proof metal or other stregntning material. So really is a design issue with the seal which is why VW won't get money from me for somethig that is faulty before I even receive it.

Hiya, question re the front driver door seal. Are they easy to replace...edit just found a post explaining its 20mins...wonder why vw say it'll take them 4 hours.

They may be referring to the cab seal and not the door seal?

I tried this today but cant get the A pillar cover off ! Wondering if I just need to be more brutal with it although it does it look like it’s trapped under the dash !
Did yours come off easily?

You need to remove the dash speaker grill first. Just get a trim removal tool under the rear edge and it will pop out. There is an additional leg on the bottom of the a pillar trim that’s sits under the speaker grill

For me it was just the two srews in the hande it then rotated down from the top and laid on the dash, remember the tweeters are still wored so it wont come all the way off. It was far enough to lay on the dash though.
