shudder / haldex

Hi all,

I bought a second hand T6.1 4 motion /2021 model with 70000K on it still under factory warranty. When at a stop turning either left or right when you start driving again there is a shudder from the rear. Turning hard left sounds like a clutch slipping noise as well sometimes. In my head all pointed to the haldex. Booked it in with VW to be looked at and now the fun begins. Our local dealer (only VW dealer here) tells me the haldex oil level was too low and they think it might have been the wrong oil but no proof of that. First point of action is to replace the oil.
I agreed and oil was replaced. Got told to pickup the car but the shudder is still there. They said just drive it sometimes it will take time to "bed" the oil in. They also said otherwise it's most likely the haldex oil pump but needs to be booked in and investigated and quoted as non of this is warranty. Charged me AU $350 for changing the oil and if I agree to do the pump it needs to be changed again.
From what I can see the Car was always serviced with VW but apparently this is not a VW problem but a dealer problem if they underfilled so I have to take it up with that dealer (which is in another state) here in Australia so no point of doing that.
I am at boiling point but in the end I just want this fixed as it doesn't sound good. Reading here it seems like the haldex pumps are a problem with the VWs.
Do I take it to the dealer and pay what ever they want to get it fixed. Order a pump replacement and try to do this myself (I have access to a hoist and know how to hold a spanner) Can get VCDS to prime it as well. Or do I drop it off at another workshop that looks after my Amaroks but are more into 4x4s and not necessarily VW experts.

My biggest worry if that it's not just the pump and given they just stated it was underfilled kind of voids all warranty on it which was the whole point of getting a second hand car that is still under factory warranty.

Thoughts are welcome.

Does your T6.1 have a diff lock?
Some of the symptoms you describe sound like your diff lock is engaged when you are trying to turn on a grippy surface.

A knackered DMF can feel like a shudder on take off.

Assuming the rear end is like in T6, there are two different oils: a) Haldex, which is part of normal service schedule and b) rear differential oil which is not changed at all. I recall reading some cases where wrong oil was changed or for example Haldex oil used in rear differential. So, my first check would be to ensure they actually changed the correct oils with correct type and also check / change the other oils.

It sadly has no rear diff lock but I agree feels like that sound. Haldex oil just got changed by the dealer which made no difference. You stop and start in a straight line or slight bend and there is no problem. You stop at an intersection and go hard right or left or try to get in a car park with hard right and hard left and loud shudder. I tried just rolling to in intersection with foot off the throttle and do a hard turn while still rolling and there is no noise so it seems it's just under load.

Rear diff has separate oils irrespective of whether it is lockable type.

Overall sounds like a diff problem as no noise in straight line - acceleration locks the Haldex clutch partially so Haldex issues should present themselves also in straight line. Or maybe one of the rear drive shafts as suggested above. (Drive shafts connect to rear diff though, not Haldex. Haldex sits in front, and is attached to, rear diff.)

Ok. Thanks for your help. Reading in here I thought I read the T6.1 has no drain for the rear diff. Will take it back and ask for the rear diff oil to be changed and see what they come up with.

I remember seeing that as well though not sure if it was T6.1 specifically. Probably because dealers do not change the rear diff oils in regular maintenance, ever. I guess the diff could still be dried through the filling hole by pumping, although maybe not to the last drop.

Just my 5 cents worth......

It is interesting that your local dealer thinks it is not covered by the Warranty. That doesn't sound correct, and surely you local dealer should still fix it under warranty and pass costs onto the other dealer?
And if it turns out not to be the Haldex, then back to being repaired under warranty.

Is there a VW Australia mothership you can report this to?

yeah don't get me started on the dealer.
Did not budge said each dealer is out on their own and if it is workmanship done wrong from the dealer it's not a general VW problem but a dealer problem. Take it up with the other dealer and go away ;-)
Given I have no other options here as they are the only VW dealer I'm stuffed. Had the thought of VW Australia but in the end stuck now and just want a car that doesn't make strange noises as I just bought it and want to start throwing money at it with a fitout.
Might take it back to the dealer and ask them what's next as nothing changed. My assumption is they tell me they start replacing parts as in haldex pump and so on to try and narrow it down and charge me for the pleasure. Just frustrated as I can't move forward with anything and have to throw money at it and they are not cheap to start with even second hand here.
Bought 2 new Amarok's off them as well but that was years ago and no one cares any more. I get it no one wants to do warranty repairs but this is just wrong.

They love warranty work. They get paid good money by the importer, and the bill gets paid on time.

Most dealers would go out of business without warranty work, hence Honda dealers struggling to make ends meet and there being so few of them.

But they're right when they say they won't clear up A.N.Other dealers mess. They're a business, their mission being to make a profit, and they aren't going to spend money sorting out another business' mess for free.

On the crafter 4motion which has a similar system, the smallest amount of water in the haldex will give the exact symptoms you have.
Has the vehicle been through water over the diff / haldex, are the breathers connected?
Just changing the oil will not remove all the water, you also need to unbolt the haldex pump (2 bolts) and clean out the pump cavity, also clean the screen while there.
Then fill with new haldex oil , run briefly, and top oil to correct level .
