FWIW, I've reported on here previously that my locking bolt sits inside an old socket that I had lying in the bottom of a toolbox and which stops it from being got at with a set of grips - Go back to Page 16, Post 304 for a picture.

That's a great idea and simple. Thanks, locking wheel nut arriving today so will see if I can find an old socket. Found similar items on Ebay aswell, see pic.

@kg1709. Sorry but I can't remember the socket size but it was an old ½ " one. I assume that anything bigger than the key for the new locker will do the job - I just grabbed the first one that looked right in the bottom of the 'might come in useful later' box. TBH, I can't be arsed to go out and look as it would mean getting on the floor and the ground's wet!

...so, to enhance the security measure, always park with the spare wheel over a deep and dirty puddle?

I've just fitted a 215/65/17 under there to match the rolling radius of my 255/45/19 cantera's.

It fits under, but the hinge side of the carrier needs moving down onto it's lower position to accomadate the wider wheel.
@JasonW - When you lowered the carrier, did you have to fit longer bolts or are the standard 1's long enough?

I am taking out a 16" standard size spare & fitting a 17" spare to accommodate the bigger calipers on an impending front brake upgrade from 308mm to 340mm

Like the sound of your brakes upgrade @moomin-j

No the carrier won't need longer bolts. It drops down a position on the hinge side... the exisiting bolts work fine.

@JasonW - it’s nothing special really, just the bigger standard 17” Vw chassis 1’s, usually fitted to T32’s (and before I stand corrected by the forum technical police - they are also sometimes fitted to other T6’s!!!). They are painted a sparkly Candy Apple red though…

More to do with aesthetics than outright stopping power.

That reminds me to sort my 16” spare out. Have you found a spare 17”, yet? I guess a spare Cantera would be as rare as hens teeth and also a gamble with being pinched

@Ads_Essex

Yes - a 17" Devonport spare & good tyre was sorted from @Bear at the last T6 Forum meet @ Brook Meadows. He also had another 3 to dispatch to other lucky Forum attendees. Beer tokens were swapped and all were happy.
I just need to save my pennies for new discs & pads to suit the bigger calipers...

Why can't I be happy with what Vw supplied - when will all the spending end?

Just taken my Caravelle in for an oil and filter service to my local garage ,the lads there are fab.....George just came into the waiting area to ask if I would like my spare wheel carrier tightening up ,I looked at him a little puzzled and asked why....he then told me only one bolt was just about keeping it in place. He asked as he knows I'm very particular with my vehicles and I wouldn't of left it like that. I then proceeded to follow him to have a look and found no spare wheel in the carrier !!!
Needless to say I'm now as mad as hell ,the thieving bar stools.....nothing is safe any more.....I know it's only a wheel but I'm f*cked off...... ...rant over.....:(

Oh, so sorry. Not what you need.
Is it any consolation that the little bar-stewards only went for the wheel and did not damage/steal your van?
I shall now go out to the drive and see if mine is still there . . .

Outrageous.

Any idea when or how they robbed it?

One good thing about having a slightly lowered van is that you can't get the spare wheel off the van without jacking it up a bit.
