Strange noise under acceleration when cold ?

Hi guys,
I have a 21 plate t6.1 150 dsg. For the last month or so I have noticed a strange high pitched whoosh / squeak that only comes on under acceleration. And only for the first mile of driving or so . If you drive with hardly any throttle it’s not there but if you press say. 60% throttle it makes this weird noise!
It sounds like boost pressure / turbo sort of noise but seems strange as it’s only for the first Mile or so and goes! The van has now only done 4000 miles or so .
Anyone else have anything like it?

Is it the first mile every time you start the engine or just the first mile when the engine is cold?

Just when the engine is cold , so pretty much once a day! Unless I don’t accelerate much !

Would that make a high pitch hiss when it’s cold?
Just was not sure if that was normal for a new van with so many valves and pipes everywhere can’t see or feel any other problems just a strange noise that happens sort of once a day!

My thoughts were;
EGR valve opens to help warm up a cold engine, so I was thinking of what is beyond that like the cooler and the flexipipe that goes from that to the inlet manifold.
All other hoses to do with induction are pressurised all the time so you would always hear the hissing.

another thought, are you hearing this inside the cab? Does it happen if you turn the AC off? My thinking here is it might be the evaporator pressurising you are hearing.

Oh I’ll try this morning with the ac off and see. I guess I’ll have to book it in at Vw and get them to have a look. It’s just a bit of a strange one as it’s just a funny noise!

VW will just charge you £100 diagnostic charge and tell you it’s normal. Best is work it out yourself and decide if it needs fixing.

Oh wow! I have never had a new car before , I just presumed it would be covered under a warranty!

Never bought a new car either but the details must be written in a contract terms and conditions. Probably lengthy, boring but necessary bedtime reading.
I believe the diagnostic charge is covered if a fault is found. Like @Loz said there seems to be a trend a VW dealerships of passing things off as ‘normal’.
I would try capture the noise on video with the dash display and show that to the VW service dept.
I can see why a charge is necessary, if no charge existed there would be many more paranoid owners turning up for warranty on every rattle, fart and squeak that their precious van emits.

hi, was wondering if you managed to figure out whatt was the issue.
I just had a test drive in t6.1 from Jul 2021 with 10k on clock. And it does exacly what you described. Only a mile or so when cold.
I do not own the Van yet, but I'm considering purchesing it.

No, funny enough it only seems to do it in cold weather. I just guessed it’s something turbo / pressure related and just presume it’s something they do…….

Notice mine does this. Couple of cold mornings this week. Also feels a bit down on power then you feel it clear what ever it is.

Van is brand new.

yup exactly the same with me. I guess it’s just what happens on a cold start for the first few miles .

Spoke to the dealer, they confirm that the noise is a turbo and apparently that is normal and they confirmed that most of their vans do that.
Also they said if there will be an issue with turbo it will be covered under VW warranty.
So I think it is a 'feature' of this engine.

Hi, I am experiencing the same issue with a brand new van with only 700 miles on the clock. Have you had any further issues with your van or information with the problem. Thanks

Hi All….Just to throw in a similar issue ….Last week The DSG box played up… Would not change above Third and a spanner symbol was flashing ( on the MFD ) ….Van had been sitting for a week and very cold….so little panic set in …stopped in lay-by and restarted all ok:p…..After talking to some Mech type people it seems that Oil viscosity and temperature can affect engines and gearboxes.
The wife’s Skoda (1.5tsi ) uses 0-20 never had a problem …..Just seems Global Warming is at play ….or do VW use crap oil

Ps Only done 33k but on an age basis will get the oil changed at next service
