Stuck in Belguim

Help!!!
We are on a road trip from Devon to Nuremberg in Germany in our t6 2016 van and the coil light flashes on the dash.
The van is then under power like the turbo not working. If you switch ignition off the light goes off and the turbo works but slightly noisier or perhaps it is just us.
We are stuck in Liege in Belgium and the VW mechanic says it is a leaking heat exchanger in front of the main reservoir.
He has quoted 560 euro to replace the heat exchanger.
Has anyone had this problem before and will a new heat exchanger fix it
Any help and advice welcome

We had this problem, coil light flashing and lack of power. My neighbour saw that the bottom intercooler hose had come off. He relocated it and the problem went away. I hope this helps, good luck.

Thanks for replying.
He did check the hoses fairly thoroughly.
So I am fairly confident it is not that.
Unfortunately the mechanic spoke very little English and when I eventually got him to understand he had forgot the fault code. He did show me a slightly damaged heat exchanger which was wet with oil(?)

Thanks for taking the time to reply

Some pictures - perhaps the same

Sounds like you have a damaged intercooler, a new intercooler should be easily available in Europe. This is not a big job to replace.
As a short term repair you maybe able to use needle nosed pliers to crush either side of the damaged section of the intercooler.

I'd agree it sounds like a damaged intercooler....

A few pics may help?

The mechanic showed me the damage yesterday and it was wet. However it is not so clear today. Would the wet be water?

maybe he sprayed soapy water on the rad to see if it was leaking ?

Advise what the engine code is.
You will either have an intercooler or a radiator for the charge air cooler behind the grill.
Although they look the same they are very different;
If it’s an intercooler; internally it will have the induction air with some oil carry over, if it leaks there will be an oil stain.
If it’s a radiator for the charge air cooler; internally it will have engine coolant, if it leaks there will be a water type liquid, probably pink and it will have a distinctive smell.
If it is this radiator unless you loose all of the coolant you shouldn’t have any limp mode symptoms.

I suspect you have an intercooler, in which case if there is no oil stain on the matrix I doubt it is a significant leak.
Possibly another component is leaking loosing boost pressure

Thank you for the explanation.
It is a CAAB924523 engine which I have been told is a T5.1 euro 5 engine.
When the mechanic first showed me, what he suspected as a leak on the intercooler, there was signs of liquid around a slightly damaged area but that was after a lot of motorway driving.
However the area is currently dry.
Another clue is if you are going along steady in 5th gear and press the accelerator the engine sounds like it is speeding up but the rpm is not changing.
I assume thenoise is the turbo trying to work harder with a leaky intercooler.
Does that make sense?

It’s from the T5.1 era, them being fitted to T6 vans before being replaced with the Eu6 engines.
You may already know this - I just wanted to add this in case you were concerned you’d been sold a van that was a ringer!
