T32 supplied with 102 tyres.. dealer says fine but VW HQ say otherwise..

I would go with what VW say as they are were your warranty will stop with

Yes but I haven’t fitted the wheels or tires the VW dealer has fitted wheels and tires. So who is really right?

So as I had enough and wanted to know who is right who is not. I went today to different MOT garage they do all classes MOT not a back street garage!

I have been told that they class the T32 kombi as class 4!!
The reason given was, it has 5 seats 4 side windows and rear window they called it MPV doesn’t matter V5 says LGV!
They wouldn’t have problem with 102 rated tires even if that was class 7 as they allow 10% for weight ratio!

Then I still went to different specialist tires garage I was told pretty much the same.
The 102 rated tires are all good!
Reason given the 102 rated are the highest level on 275/35r20!
And again there’s 10% on the weight ratio allowed!

I suggest anyone who is really unsure to go and ask in different garages, than just read what is here on the forum!

Hi so the latest update is that the VW dealership give in after I mentioned that I will get legal representative to look into the tires issue! Now they will be replacing the tires with 107 rated, not sure yet what size or make yet, they will let me know when the tires will be delivered.

It’s not the mot I’d be worried about, so long as you have one. It’s your insurance company that will void your policy if you have incorrectly rated tyres should you have an accident and the ratings are noted.

I’ve been through this whole process from start to finish when a cowboy van converter (*essex Vans) fitted 102’s to my T32, I had emails from my insurance company and Dunlop Tyres specifically stating that load ratings must be strictly adhered to.

let us know the size before they put them on. Ideally you're after a 265/40 for a T32 on 20s. They are readily available in 104 load rating. The fact the dealer is saying they're getting 107 makes me think they're going for an unnecessarily large size tyre, but it would be interesting to know.

I read this thread and got slightly concerned as I am waiting to collect my T6 T32 which has 20" wheels. The sales guy has said the tyres are 106W rated, does this tick the box for the van and weight rating?

Passed the MOT yesterday with these fitted.

That load rating is fine, you need minimum 103 load rating for T32. I'm going to take a guess that they're 275/40 size tyres.

Yes i believe so but for how long as i want to put air lift on it.

You are uninsured with these tyres. They need to be 103 for a t32. Your axle rating reflects this.

It really is that simple.

And yes as above 265/40 is the size you want. Not 275/40

just so I have this right, the tyres on my T32 should be 265/40 tyres and not 275/40?
Can you help me understand why before I collect my van?
Thanks from a van newbie.

275/40 are OK. They meet the load rating requirements and as such are acceptable. They are larger than ideal though, so they'll have an effect on speedo accuracy, meaning that your speedo under reads slightly. A 265/40 also meets the load rating requirements, but is closer to OEM circumference size and therefore maintains greater speedo accuracy.

Either are OK for load rating and meet all the requirements to be legal, but the 265/40 is a better size.

@ChrisR what would be your suggestion be when I collect my van. @BognorMotors says I will be uninsured on the 275/40 tyres, so shall I ask the company who are selling me the van to change them to 265/40.

Seems I have a lot to learn re vans.

I think Oli @BognorMotors was referring to the earlier posts and the 102 rated tyres that were being discussed there.

Back to your needs though. For T32 you need minimum 103 load rating, anything above that will still be legal. A 275/40 tyre with a rating of 103 or above is fine from a legal standpoint. You will be legal and insured when you collect your van, providing that you have declared any mods to the insurer.

I prefer the 265/40 for the reasons I outlined above, but the 275/40 meets the load rating requirements and is legal. You'll find it hard to get the dealer to change a tyre that meets the legal requirement for load rating though. Wait until they wear out, then replace them with the 265/40.
