T6.1 OEM Reversing Camera is poor

Just to update everyone this was fitted at the factory, VW service from 2 depots and their customer relations have all agreed it’s not right but that there is nothing they can do.

I have accepted a refund for the camera and will either see if I can sort it myself or look to get an aftermarket camera although I’m not sure what can do about the hole that will be left in the door now.

I would recommend anyone ordering a new van with barn doors not to order a camera from VW and get an aftermarket option until they fix this issue.
Thanks Mark

I hope that they will supply a new door otherwise you will be left with a hole!

I fitted a rear view camera for towing ( not a reversing camera linked to the van system) inside my rear window as I have barn doors on my T6 and they wouldn't factory fit a camera.

I think they have only recently started offering the camera for barn doors. They’re clearly haven’t got it right tho!

unfortunately no there is no chance of them replacing the door because as far as they are concerned the camera works and the correct components are installed. Despite it being of very poor quality.

That is 100% a factory fit barn door camera. Up until the T6.1 an option you could never have. This is VWs best attempt at it.
There is something wrong with the camera image on your display. Doesn’t like right to me at all

Have you swapped the actual camera over or have VW, as a warrant claim?
The image Iv posted looks a bit wonky because it’s a picture off my phone of a screen and it doesn’t show up properly.
The 3 issues I have are:
- it doesn’t actually show the back of the van/bumper/tow bar
- the corners are cut off because the camera is sitting too deep in the housing
- the actual quality of the image is very blurry(this might be because it can’t focus because it’s picking up the plastic housing.

2 VW service centres and customer relations have just said there is nothing they can do because any part they order would just do the same thing. They have checked other vans at their garages which are all the same.

As far as I’m concerned either the camera or housing has obviously had the design changed so they are not compatible.
The simplest solution for VW would be to have now moulds for the housing made to suit the camera. A very easy fix really.
Thanks Mark

Just seems like VW doesn't give a toss about the Transporter users.

How much was this option @Mark151?

The camera on my VW T-Cross is perfect - I can't see how they can just say that's what you get on your van. I wonder if that aftermarket one has the same problems.

I couldn’t agree any more! I was also shocked that they come from the factory with ZERO vinyl protection applied over any paint/panels. They put it on a £15k car but not a £45k van.
The option was only £250+vat but it’s not the point. I would happily have spent £1000 to have a decent camera.
They also don’t offer many options to van owners that they do to caravelle or minibus type vans.
Cheers Mark

All the aftermarket ones I can see look ok but you don’t know if it’s just generic pictures. Or if they suit the barn doors etc.
I also don’t understand why they aren’t more concerned to correct the issue for the sake of getting a plastic housing altered rather than fobbing anyone off claiming it’s ok.
I don’t think I have seen this poor a camera in a car ever. Let alone in 2021 when we have such good technology.

I don’t get why the line is curved !
Oh, yes, I hadn't noticed that, mine is straight. Also on mine the 2 green lines are almost parallel, on this they are a long way off being parallel.

Hi, I have just had my T6.1 delivered and I’m very disappointed with the reverse camera. I just wanted to see if anyone else had the same issues. The picture quality is very poor and the camera appears to be recessed into the holder too far so the display corners are cut off.
I also find it ridiculous that you cannot actually see the back bumper or tow bar with the camera. I have been in touch with VW who are claiming that is how it’s designed!
Thanks Mark

Is that the tow ball within the black border at the bottom? I mean the black border is see through??

You can just barely make out the edge of the tow ball above the question mark. The black border definitely isn’t see through tho!

Well I decided before looking at alternative cameras to have a quick look to see if I can improve the current setup. 20 minutes with a hacksaw and file and it’s made a massive improvement. It’s a real shame the black border and warning logo cannot be coded out tho because the view is now perfect without them! 40443119-EA8C-4E53-B3C3-89361C33571C.jpeg860CBC8A-59EC-478F-B7E8-CCD5A10F2820.jpeg5A5D7F10-88B7-404C-B47B-82A62AF8F960.jpegD91B411E-BEF9-40CB-B702-58BF073414FD.jpeg

Hi, I’m new to this, I’ve been looking at some threads and have seen people with similar problems, I’m hoping someone can help. I purchased a T6.1 last year with a factory fitted reversing camera ( on barn doors in the seemingly new VW position of in the middle of the door!!!) it’s been fine for a year then suddenly went to a sort of birds eye view where the corners have been cut off and a poor image quality (I’m presuming the closing of the doors has dislodged the camera) VW have repositioned it once, it stayed there for a month and became dislodged again last week, the van is in today to be fixed and this afternoon VW phoned to say this is how the camera should be?? Anyone had a similar problem, any help would be really appreciated, thanks, Marc.
