T6 issue, possibly flywheel??

Morning all,

Fairly new to posting here, read through lots of chats over the last few days to try and help with our kombi issue so thought I'd try and get a few suggestions here if possible!

So the van is a 2018 T6 102 startline with 118k and full VW service history. Purchased in January so it has a little warranty left, but the warranty doesn't allow any work or inspection from VW!

So recently noticed there is clutch judder when it's warmed up, in first and second and doesn't like reverse much either! Also, the biting point feels really snappy, like if you don't completely nurse the clutch when driving off it wants to pull the wheel out of your hand! Now we have nothing around 2.2k to 2.5k revs, normally upwards of 50 there is a horrible wobble through the van, but only when under load. This stops when you take foot off accelerator regardless of what revs or speed and isn't there when braking. Its worse going up hills aswel!

Read lots of posts for ideas and also been to 2 different garages. They told us it was bad engine mounts, and did show us underneath the van where the front mount had split and the rear seemed excessive. So, after a drive from Manchester to Oxford in another vehicle to collect the parts as there was no UK or European stock left at VW had these fitted yesterday and its no better! Even had all 4 wheels off, checked and re balanced to see if that cured the wobble but it hasn't!

Now it seems all of the ideas from garages are getting expensive for them to say, stick a clutch and flywheel in and see how it goes...1500 quid to see how it goes isn't ideal!

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Or if you know of any places that could have a look in or around Manchester area would be mega!

Thanks again
Jay

Has it been mapped?
The judder under load sounds a bit like the clamping force of the clutch isn’t coping with the torque being put through it.
I guess it could also be a sign of clutch failure in an unmapped van.
Someone with more mechanical knowledge will be along shortly I’m sure.

Hi, no it's not mapped as far as I know, the dealer I got it from says he only buys vans from VW and it had a single business owner before us. Must say it doesn't feel mapped. Clutch doesn't slip or anything, it's more the wobble and judder

If its under warrany AND the DMF is found to be faulty then you may be able to get the whole lot done under warranty. Had the exact same issue and was eventually fixed (after trying other things like you) by replacing DMF/clutch. I knew the DMF would be covered under warranty if faulty but thought I might need to pay for the clutch plate myself. My mechanic told the warranty guys that the DMF and clutch came together as a 'married' kit so they paid for the lot. The problem with these warranties is they mostly expect you to provide photographic proof of the faulty DMF which you can only do once the gearbox is broke open. If there is no DMF fault (side to side wiggle or excessive rotation) you will end up paying yourself.

I'd say with that miliage and the symtoms (judder pulling in 1'st and reverse) this is most likely the DMF/clutch but that mileage may not be covered under warranty so check it out.

Did you have the wobble/vibration when accelerating aswel? Few people have said DMF now, or even a driveshaft?? Warranty company say the flywheel is covered, but all other clutch parts and friction plate are not, also parts that have been damaged by another faulty part are not covered!

Issue now resolved! Drivers side driveshaft replaced and now the van drives smooth! Inner CV joint had failed, lost all grease and joint had become worn!
Hi, what was the cost for replacement? I think mine has gone too!!!! Did a VW dealer do it or an independant garage. Thank

Hi, We went to Awesome Gti to have it repaired, the driveshaft was 580+VAT, then 1.5 hours labour. All in was around 800, the gaiter had split, so there was thick grease around the steering rack directly above where the joint is. Looked like it had been there a while, hence the joint being excessively worn, causing the wobble!

Hi thanks for the reply. I have had a quote around that figure by a self-acclaimed VAG independent specialist using genuine parts. I was a bit disappointed because my 2018 van has had an easy life with only 42K miles covered. Thanks

Ours is also a 2018, higher miles, but in very good condition! Spoke to the trader we bought the van from an he said driveshaft all along, he's dealt with transporters for nearly 20 yrs and said this is a common fault!

Common fault! Mine is drivers side, hope the near side doesn't go. Thanks for the info :)

There are issues with driveshaft splines at higher mileages but if the CV joint gaiter is compromised for whatever reason the CV joint is guaranteed to fail.
I’ve had outer CV joint gaiters last 10+ years on cars and inners over 20 years. Yours could have been snagged on debris or damaged by a mechanic doing other work and that could happen anytime regardless of age / mileage.

The mechanic did change brake dics and pads all round weeks before the drive shaft started knocking! Could this be connected?
Had shaft changed using genuine VW part, but 3 weeks later noise is back. Taking back to garage next week but expect to be fobbed off.
Any thoughts anyone?

I see the disappointment. I am on my 3rd Transporter, overall reliability so so… However if you look around other brands don’t really shine and are not any better or worse…

I only have 42k on clock and have had it since 2 month old. We converted it ourselves and got it registered as motorcaravan and it's my daily drive. Family love it. Once the drive shaft gets sorted again i ll probably be happy again. But after 3 weeks i think it is very poor. Bet the garage tries to blagg it. Thanks
