T6: Tyre pressure monitoring unavailable' / 'ABS controller error (ESC) [Resolved]

I have this same issue on my 2016 Kombi van. It started just earlier as we driving the last leg to a short break near Aberfeldy. Before I search YouTube, where do I find the wheel speed sensor? Do I need to take a wheel off? I'm on holiday without tools and 426 miles from home.

Have you done a scan? Do you know which sensor you need to replace? It's easiest if you take off the wheel. Then its 1 H6(or H5) bolt to remove. You may need a screwdriver/lever to remove it.

Hi Paddy26. I don't have the tech to scan it myself. I'll maybe find a local garage and get it scanned, or wait till I get home and go to my local trusted garage, (not the VW main dealer?) I didn't have money to burn.

I love that area, envious of your location at least!

Personally if I was on holiday without tools I'd probably just drive with a little more care and look into it when home rather than trying to take bit's apart and maybe cause more issues. For access you probably want the wheel off as they're behind the disk.

I'll not be taking anything apart just now.
It is beautiful here. My view right now as I sit on the balcony looking over Loch Tay with a cold beer.

Beware. The sensors are handed. My eBay special for £17 was for the lhs. I made it fit rhs for now but will replace it as soon as my motorbike spares me some cash for other interests...

Thanks for the tip. I'll take care too get the right side when I know which needs replacing.

Warning symbols disappeared after about 3 minutes, I agree with @roadtripper, its probably debris between the ring and the sensor. As we left Busfest today, symbols appeared and cleared before we went out of the gate. I am going to check each sensor before I do anything else. Thanks everyone for the feedback.

Am I right in thinking the sensors are handed left and right but they are the same front and rear? If that was the case I could order one left side and one right side and I can be fairly confident I have the parts to fix whichever has failed (Unless two fail on the same side)

yes they’re just left/right handed not front or rear specific. Changed 5 now! Fairly easy fix

Has any one had this after hitting a pothole?

I hit a pothole at about 45 the week before last. One of those big ones that immediately loosens your fillings and makes you certain that the TPMS ‘low pressure’ warning will illuminate.

It didn’t, but I did immediately get a brake warning that said to check the condition of the rear brakes (or words to that effect).

The pothole was so severe that I even stopped to check if the tyre pressures visually, and can’t believe it didn’t crack an alloy.

Since then I’ve had an intermittent ABS warning, before getting the two mentioned here:
Error: ABS stabilisation control ESC
Tyre pressure loss indicator currently not available.

These have now become permanent.

VCDS shows it to be that rear nearside wheel that hit the pothole.

Not in the van but had similar in one of the XC70s after some rough driving in the lakes.

In the end that was sorted by the dealer cleaning the sensor and the tone ring

that sounds right up my street. Cheers - i'll give it a clean and see

My light show like yours mentioned above came on shortly after going over some very 'violent' road V markings when I was in Scotland. I think there was so much paint forming the markings they were like kerbs. There was a lane closed on the outside so traffic was being forced over the v markings which really shook the van when I drove over them. I think that might have done for my wheel speed sensor. I have just had the rear right replaced at my local independent garage after testing and identifying the fault. It cost me £160.00 parts and labour. All its well again now.

I had the same problem.
Bought Carista on Amazon with discount code for £26
Identified it was rear LH wheel speed sensor
Booked into local garage £95 all in, job done...
If you buy the sensor online to do the job yourself be sure it has the correct plug type for your specific vehicle, apparently there are two types of plug.
