Anyone out there using a Thule wanderway tailgate bike rack .
I like the look of them and the option of starting with a two bike carrier and adding additional bike holders if required.

any real world reviews / pictures.

Just put one on today - haven't tried it with bikes on yet! Feels solid enough. Measurements for the 3M tape in the instruction manual are a bit out... but otherwise it was a pretty painless job to attach.

Got this bike rack but have wrapped and painted black for consistent all one color as black suits my indium grey van better. why is it not either all black or all AL ... wasn't paying the 800 for all black version of VW type... put some photos on later

Yeah agreed it's a bit annoying being two tone. Interested to see your photos and have more details about how you've wrapped it etc.

Hi any chance of a bit more info of the vinyl used and how you applied it? many thanks in advance Simon

Black satin vinyl wrap off eBay .. self sticky type .. nothing fancy .. I suppose apply the same as “wrapping’

Hi all, just wondering if there is enough clearance (between rack and caravan) when carrying bikes on the wanderway whiles towing a caravan? turning and reversing etc.

thanks

How do you find opening & closing the tailgate with the pop top? I have a SCA pop top roof and wondered if there is any fouling?

Here is the Thule with the tailgate open. It goes nowhere near my pop top. The only difference is obviously the additional pressure needed to close it due to the updated struts. A firm grip is required!0F210874-9D1C-4031-8448-9AAC04C4552A.jpeg

I have an SCA pop top and the Thule bike rack. No issues at all and no fouling of pop top

I have the Wanderway with the tailgate and its fine with the pop top. Its actually the handlebars of the bikes that you need to watch out for - if you are opening the tailgate with them on. The inside bike handlebars will press down on the roof if you open to max.

Very good bike rack. I bought a spare tightening key that I leave inside the van. Got from here:

Buy Thule 54292 Torque Key 6Nm For Thule WanderWay 2 - Black

Do you know of anyone on the forum that’s worked out how to fit a spare wheel and jerry can holder to the Wanderway like you can to the OEM VW Bike Rack??

Hiya, new to posting. I have a tailgate T6 and have just ordered a Thule Wanderway 2 bike rack, so I need to change my tailgate struts? If so what do I need? cheers

Welcome. Always worth a quick search as most topics have been covered.

Uprated Tailgate Struts

I’ve got 1200N on mine with a 2 bike Wanderway. It is quite heavy to close and would be too much without the rack on. It does however hold the rack up with a bike on. Worth trying the standard struts first to see if they work. They did for me but only just and were a bit sensitive to the temperature.

Cool, nice one I’ll give them a go. Did you use any protective film for the tailgate?

Yes, I used the patches that came with the rack. If you haven’t got any then it’s easy enough to cut some to shape using some protective film. I’d recommend not putting the rack on for a day or two after applying the film so it has a chance to dry. I didn’t wait and they have wrinkled a bit so look crap when the rack is removed.

Thanks, I’d not realised the rack comes with a set which is good, nearly bought some…I have seen it in the image. The rack is on order so hopefully here this week sometime. I need to find a decent cover for my bike/bikes, as with anything else spoilt for choice. Cheers.

I don’t use a cover as I’m not sure one would survive for long as the bikes protrude above the roof. It would also add lots of drag and additional force on the rack/bike. If it’s going to be wet, or in winter, I use Muc-off disc brake covers to stop them getting contaminated.

A cover for when parked up is a good idea though, but doesn’t need to be anything fancy or particularly robust.

Another thing worth considering is reaching the rack to mount the bikes. If you are below about 6ft I’d recommend some fold away steps to make it easier. Something like this.
