Towbar Preparation Question

The PDC module is in the passenger rear quarter. Full instructions came with the loom. This is the tool you’d need For VW Pin Removal Tool Keys X3 Great Design & Quality Brand New | eBay

Now I’m confused, so towbar prep doesn’t mean that there’s a plug somewhere at the rear of the van, it means I have to bring a loom into the van in the front of the cabin.

I have checked the pfjones website for pdf instructions but I can’t even work out which loom I would need and can’t see any detailed info on any of them.

Thanks to Pauley and Deakey for their help this far..

Towbar prep gives you factory wiring in the vehicle but it’s left inside rear quarter panel ready to utilise so you don’t need to run wiring to front of van

I am so grateful that I joined this forum!!!!

So my story is that I bought a van with Towbar prep in the ad (from a VW dealer) and have the 1D7 on the sticker by the steering wheel so am fairly confident that I have it.

The van was lined by a local guy who insists that he would have left a panel to acces the looms if there was towbar wiring (he recalls thinking that I said i have it and he noticed that it wasn’t there!!)

I have got into the back of my van with an endoscope and (I think) found the wiring for the towbar loom to plug into.

The connectors in the pics are in the back left quarter, approx 20cm above floor level and face forwards, I think they are the ones but need a bit of reassurance from someone who knows???

Can anyone confirm that these are the towbar connectors for the loom where towbar prep is fitted? (@Deaky & @Pauly )

Yes, they are the ones

The mounting points will be there whether the van has towbar prep or not. What you get is the towing module, fuses, coding and cable running to the back of the van ready to connect the towing electrics to.
Hi @Deaky I have a 9 seater shuttle NOW converted and wanted to.know whether u knew if mine would have the towbar prep done?
If so is it just a bolt on towbar i need?
Thanks Paul

If you have 1D7 on your build sticker then you have towbar prep. If you have then you’ll need the bar and the last bit of wiring kit with the socket on.

Under the steering wheel above the pedals it should be unless someone has pulled it off
You have to go low and look up to see it

So the towbar is now fitted and I have today tested the electrics and they all work, this includes the isolation of the parking sensors and trailer indication in the dash display. My van is a 2018 150 dsg Kombi that was specced with towbar preparation.

Fitting the towbar was straightforward once the bumper was removed (see the video here), simply a matter of removing the under tray (easy - just a couple of bolts and clips) rear bar (easy - 2 bolts each side) and sliding the towbar into the chassis rails, then 3 bolts each side through pre drilled holes.

As to the electrics, I bought a Westfalia kit from autodoc.co.uk, their site is good and guides you to the correct one. As I had Towbar prep it was just a case of routing the loom to the rear quarter panel and plug one of the 2 plugs into the empty socket and swap a couple of pins over from the existing plug into the other towbar loom socket (sounds complicated but easy enough with the right tool - see the post at the top of this page from Deaky).

It was simply a matter of removing wires from the original plug and fitting them into the same hole on the loom plug which was identical, the instructions provided give plenty of help and wire colour/plug location detail.

Anyway, box it all up and test it and everything works, this is the reason for my post today, I had lots of conflicting info on whether the van needing coding to see the towbar etc etc, I can now say for sure that as far as mine is concerned it did not need coding, everything was just plug and play.

As to what I had to get to make the installation, again there is lots of conflicting info around, as per the picture below, I didn't need anything from 7.2 below as the part indicated in 7.1 was already there, if you want to check yours it can be clearly seen from below with the bumper fitted.

What I did buy are the 2 spacer pads that stick to the top of the towbar to support the bumper (2 off 7H0807252A)

All in it took me just over 4 hrs, I didn't use a ramp or jack the van at all, simply parked it and got on with it, although the towbar mounting bolts are tight and it would have been easier if I could have raised the vehicle by a few inches to give a bit more leverage on my bar.

This is great info! Could I ask which tow bar wiring kit you bought? I have tow bar prep too, but not sure which one I need.
thanks

@Daffy Thanks to this wicked thread I'm ordering parts today, when routing the cables to rear quarter do I need to drill or is there an existing route? Also did you fit 13pin? Im only towing a boat but thinking I may as well make it future proof while im doing it.

I struggled to find the info in one place, that was the reason why I put the thread together.

There is no drilling involved at all, there is a bung at the left rear of the van and the loom that I ordered had a similar grommet fitted to the loom so it simply fitted in place of the bung.

Once the bumper is off it’s pretty obvious where it all goes, if you want to have a look at the wiring and towbar installation books pm me with an e-mail address and I’ll pop them over if I can find them.

I went for the 13 pin and bought an adaptor to use with the normal 7 pin plug on an older trailer.

Very helpful guidance, thank you. I stuck my phone under in selfie mode and took a picture as I was struggling with my varifocal glasses!!!

Hi @Deaky
I have a new T6.1 with tow bar prep.
will it need coding when the 13 pin wiring is plugged into the socket in rear quarter panel

I had towbar prep on mine and it didn’t need coding. All the same, the fitter still rigged up his test light board and checked that all was ok
