Trying to fit an LED strip light in the back of the van

Im trying to fit a halo style strip light in the back of my van around the pop top. Bought a neon strip which will fit perfectly where I want it but I have a question about the wiring if anyone can help.

They came supplied with a mains plug, I'm after hard wiring them with a switch in the van.

Unfortunately I don't have an inverter.

I've attached a photo of the back of the plug and was wondering if a 12v to 24v DC step up converter unit will work for powering them?

I only know basic wiring and this is above my pay grade.

Any help would be appreciated

I would use a proper 12v to 24v led driver rather than one of those as they will not be as well regulated as a pukka one. You are more likely to damage them with that converter.

Thanks for the reply, don't suppose you have any idea where I can get one?

From having a google I can only find ones that are either a 12v or a 24v not ones that convert it from 12v to 24v

Sorry - read it in a hurry. I have waded through the rest on CPC and they are all the same :( . I t does look as though the buck converter with one is the way to go - I don't like adding things in a daisy chain to get things to work but sometimes needs must. I will keep looking.

I appreciate your help pal, I dont either but it's the only way I can get my head round them actually working with a stable current

Would it not be easier to send those back and buy some that use 12V instead?
Probably, but I've got them now and it's a hassle taking them back to the shop. Plus they are exactly (bar the voltage issue) the ones I'm after that change colour ect and the right fit for where I want them. For the sake of a few quids worth of parts there will be a way to make it work, I just need someone smarter than me to tell me what that is and what I'll need.

How much were they? I'd be inclined to get a 12v set and use those in the house somewhere. You'll probably spend as much getting them to work as buying another set.
Only £30 from Costco, not worth the round trip to take them back. If I can't get them going I'll just stick them in one of the kids bedrooms.

The main reason I wanted them as they are a single strip of lights instead of lots of little visable ones and work on Bluetooth via app on the phone to change the colour and dim ect, I've not been able to find any that do the same in 12v when I've been looking. All the 12v ones seem to be single colour.

Plus I like a challenge, there's got to be a way that's not that expensive to make these work

All the ones that I can find that are 12v input with 24v output do not give any details on how the output voltage is set! They just give the output range such as 12 to 43v - which is no help at all. I was looking at this one MEAN WELL LDH-45A-1050W but no mention of how the output is achieved. It is never easy! I suspect that Mean Well do produce a suitable one but information is light.

I'll drop them an email and see if they have anything that ticks the box for what I'm trying to achieve. Thanks for all the help, I'll let you know how I get on!

The problem you have is that regulator is also the controller for the LED's so the only way to get these to work in the van is by using an inverter.

That is on my list of future purchases TBF, I just didn't want to have to buy one just for the sakes of running an LED strip light

Have a look at post 12 on this thread.
