TSi MPG

I have just finalised a spec on a 150TSI SWB Kombi Startline in pure grey, I haven't driven one but it fits the budget and I only do short journeys with the occasional long trip to UK bike trackdays so think a petrol will suit me 90% of the time.
It will be a keeper and as soon it is out of warranty I will be looking to chip it. No one offers a 204 chip which is surprising if it is the same engine?
Having previously owned a 204 Sport Vito I doubt anything could compare to that powertrain, the engine sounded epic!

Surely a VW tuning shop that looks after the VW Gti engines etc for tuning, that is the route that I am going down, apparently they can easily make over 300 bhp ?

I think eveyone needs to relax about the diesel thing and its effect on residuals especially in relation to the VW Transporter. These vans really come into thier in own terms of holding thier value as they start to age a little. There will ALWAYS be demand for these VW vehicles despite the power unit.
Personally, ( and speaking from experience), theres NO WAY I'd have a vehicle with an, ' early petrol ', engine fitted. Petrol engines, especially in commercial vehicles, have got a long, long, long way to go untill they will give the kind of performance and economy that all current diesel engined vehicle owners have become used to and like.
Its inevitable that there will be a swing from diesel to petrol/hybrid, but certainly wont be in the lifetime of my 2017 T6 TDI.
Cheers.

I think that there will alwaysbe Petrol v Diesel people and that is the way it is until or unless something drastic happens, otherwise lets all stay T6 friends

Dont get me wrong, I'll go for whats best for my needs and the environment. If I feel a petrol engine is up to the task I'll have it in any vehicle.
Time will tell I guess.

There is already if they are not Euro6, as nobody wants them especially with the fines that are coming into place for Cities around Europe & the UK, also you say Motorhomes not a Volkswagen which is hardly a Motorhome !

I say this as I have had Motorhomes varying in size from 10mtrs down to the smallest at 7mtrs, they are Motorhomes.
Yes I referred to the Eu6 issue earlier. And I said "campervans and motorhomes", you'd be amazed how many pension pots have been dipped into to be spent on Calis or aftermarket van converters!

Three and a half weeks I’ve had the van now. The last week, mainly town driving.
It returned 22mpg.

That just isn’t good enough. Even the wife commented that we seem to be in Petrol stations a lot these last few weeks. She’s not wrong.

Anyway, people are getting overly worried about diesels. From what I’ve read the Euro 6 engines are safe from the proposed extra charges etc. It’s the older engines that may have some problems.
Vans carry loads and weight. Which in turn needs torque. Petrol suits smaller and mid sized cars which carry far less weight.

I can’t wait to get my T5GP 140 diesel back if I’m honest.
If it was me buying a new van tomorrow, I would tick the box that says 150bhp diesel with DSG.

As a comparison of petrol verses diesel we have just come back from holiday in Gran Canaria. Car at home and up to the airport is a 2ltr bluemotion Tiguan, car on holiday was Tiguan TSI 1.4 petrol. 3 adults and 2 kids plus suitcases. TSI is so much quieter and a bit smoother. I did change gear more and it did not have the grunt on hills when fully loaded but you just try to plan a bit further ahead when driving. For every day driving I would say the TSI would be OK, economy seemed good. Test would be how good the engine is when you have got 50K plus on it. I agree with above about having a diesel for load lugging and that a car with a small petrol engine is not the most exciting thing in the world to drive, but there is not much fun driving now anyway. A 2 ltr TSI could be made by the manufactures to have more torque at the expense of top end which would suit a heavy van.

The 150 tsi is a detuned golf gti lump so has plenty of potential. Mine will never haul a full payload, a trackbike with all the gubbins, offset removing kombi seats and it is only 200kg of load.

Long story short, I flew out to Dortmund Yesterday morning to attend a motor auction and accidentally bought 2 motorcycles a couple of engines and parts (around 450kg give or take). The auction house was keen to clear the lot so I ended up having to hire a van to drive them through France to ship them to Jersey
I was delighted to be presented with a 150 Tsi DSG, I own the 150 DSG diesel and drove the same route last month with a similar load perfect comparison test

Driving from the pickup to auction house I noticed first how quiet the engine was and how it seemed to glide along I did notice through the city it did change gear a lot but nothing to complain about, a short blast up to the auction on an open road and still no real complaints it got up to speed nicely and was so quiet, I was even starting to think on how I could convince her indoors that we may need a new van!

But after loading it with only around 450kg. Oh dear... even though it pulls the weight you can feel it (I very rarely feel any load in my van), it drags on the revs, constantly changes down and seems to develop its power far to high in the rev range meaning I ended up putting it in S on the gearbox forcing it to hold the gear for longer something I never do in my diesel I was desperate to join the motorways so I could engage the ACC and forget about how frustrating and tiring this van was to drive even then it was up and down the gearbox and wow does it make a racket at mid to high revs.

Total distance from Dortmund to St Malo is 550ish miles my diesel did it happily on a tank the Tsi managed 325 miles before gasping for more motion lotion which for me just isn't good enough I collect bikes from all over Europe and mpg is important to me.

I really wanted to like the Tsi and maybe now I've had the chance to look at the figures a 204Tsi may be the better choice for my needs but until a petrol hybrid appears (I will test drive one if and when VW make one) I know I will be sticking to the Tdi

Now that's a great "real world" test!

I have a VW T6 TSI 204hp 4motion DSG since January 2016 here in France.
Had it remap first time at 280hp and 410nm then a revision at 290HP and 450Nm.
next step will be to make it run 100% on E85 with vauxhall injector's. Here in France E85 is less than 0.7€/liter and you get more horsepower with it. Race gaz at f***ing deal! E85 is at something like 112 aki so 118 Ron much more knock resistant than 98 gazoline at 98 Ron or 93 AKI.
I'm running with Mix of 98 gazoline and 30% of E85 at the moment until I get injector that can deliver enough to run 100% E85 and add some ignition timing to get over 300hp, maybe.
150 and 204 hp have exactly same engine even though the engine code are different CJKA and CJKB ( I checked most part of engine, fueling and turbo on EKTA) so a 150 hp TSI can make same number as mine and their is already some tuner making it in the country's that already had those engine on the T5.1.
My brother have a T5.1 180 Bitdi remaped and their is no way he can follow me. Their is this big hill on the highway next to my house ( Cassis next to Marseille) 80 to 450 meter high in a couple miles (6% is righten on the signs). My brother can climbed at max 170 KM/H I'm at that same climb at 200KM/H in Fifth gear or 160km/H in 7th gear. MY very old T4 TDI remap at 140 hp was going up at 130km/H and my T5V6 was climbing at 150km/H before I tuned it, My toyota GT86 remap at 240hp climb it at about same speed as the T6 TSI. I go up this road every day.

In England REVO have a few map for the VW T5 TSI ( also CJKA engine):
REVO Products for VOLKSWAGEN, Transporter T5 , 2.0 Litre Petrol, TSI, 204ps 258lbft | Revo Technik

PS : after my remap the MPG went much higher on cruizing on High way.

Great to see a new member with a tsi as well who is pleased with it.

Also to see the power delivery that can be made with this engine, as I say mine is the 204 tsi dsg, so look forward to some fun..
Look forward to seeing more posts from you.
Cheers.

I suppose the really capable lot will just drop a new petrol engine into their vans when required....probably cheaper than a new van and depreciation. Did see in a mag where a RS8 (I think) Audi petrol lump was fitted. That made good progress and then some!!!

I quite agree, but if you are buying new then best to buy Petrol I guess.......but a RS8 would be much better than a 2.0 ltr
