Usable spare wheel advice needed.

Hi, I have a T6.1 and have recently gone from 205 65 16 clatons to 235 65 17 oz rally raids with bfgoodrich tyres. I want a usable spare to carry on a journey if I get a puncture etc. Can anyone advise if fitting a tyre with a slightly smaller diameter make a difference I.e. a 215 60 17 davenport or vw steel in the pic. I want the spare to fit underneath in its normal position as I have a tailgate with a bike rack mounted so rear mounted isn't an option. Also will the davenport or vw steel wheel still fit with a altair rib fixing bracket which I'm fitting next month?. Cheers.

A 225/75 16 puts you within 1% difference so woukd be suitable as a spare.

Have a play with...

That makes more sense 👍. I don't know if this sounds stupid as I'm quite new to this, but would the 225 75 16 tyre go on the 215 rim? I'm asking as these rims are readily available and have the correct PCD.

If it's any reassurance my 6.1 was a demonstrator and the dealer ordered it with 18 inch Palmerston wheels and a 17 inch steel spare and fitted tyres to be close to same diameter as you suggest.

One thing I would say is that having had to use the spare (massive pot hole) the two things I would recommend:

I was massively thankful I had copper greased the spare wheel carrier boots when I fitted the SpareSafe to protect it from theft when I had to drop the carrier in the dark!

Even after 3 years the steel wheel looked like it had been in the sea from living under the van. I'd strongly recommend a preemptive coat of something like Hammerite (apart from the mating surfaces) to protect it if you can.

🤔 Makes me wonder if I should take a look at the state of our spare before our next europe adventure.
Always remember to put it in the carrier so you can get to the valve to check the pressure.

Which we all do every 3 months right... *Cough*

Definitely worth a check before big trips.
