Van height?

I measured mine using a piece of wood on the top to measure from too. I also used the measure app on my iPhone which uses the LiDAR sensor on the back. That was accurate too. Problem is I still forget how high it is, so I rarely go under a barrier that is less than 2.5m just to be sure, lol.
Ha Ha! I have roof bars on mine so I put a plank across them and used a laser measuring thingy, wifey called me in for lunch, had lunch and later set off somewhere (uphill) and then the obvious happened, fortunately it landed on a grass verge and not into someones windscreen. Just a tiny graze on my spoiler, Lucky!!!

I've got bigger tyres and a roof rack on my van. I got out my 2m spirit level and layed it across the roof racks and measured up to it. It came in at 2190mm.

The carpark at work says 2.2m but I know there is plumbing pipes that drop lower than that in there as I've scraped the roof racks on them. There is like only one space that I can fit into that won't scrape. So you can probably understand how pissed off I get if I arrive at work and some turd has parked in that spot, especially if there is like plenty of other spots elsewhere.

So, I finally got around to measuring the height of my van yesterday. I used the "long piece 2x1 across the highest point" method. with a spirit level to ensure the 2x1 was level and a plumb-line to ensure the measurements were vertical, BUT the van was parked across a slight incline, so the height measured 200.0 cm on one side and 194.5 cm on the other.

My assumption is that, provided the 2 heights were measured equidistantly from each the top corners of the van roof, I can just take the average of these 2 measurements to give a van height of 197.25 cm. Is my assumption correct or am I making a schoolboy geometry error?

I’d do it again. You should be good going through a 2.1m barrier but if you want to know if you can go through a 2m barrier and with the error in the barrier height etc etc would you risk it based on the average?

I saw someone in a t5 today with bikes on the back about to go through a 2.1m barrier and panicked and ran it him waving my hands, not sure if he’d have gone for it but my own anxiety about forgetting came out! :slow rofl:

My van comes in at 2.05M max with the full camper conversion the back but without all the kit for a long trip away and I suspect a certain piece of my anatomy would pucker up a bit if I tried go go under a 2.1M barrier so I've managed to avoid them thus far. That said, we were on our way home from Cornwall a couple of years ago and stopped at a services in Somerset (can't remember the name but it's down the road off a junction and is possibly the ugliest motorway services in the country!). We passed said 2.1M barrier, went in via the motorhome / high vehicle entrance and parked up close enough to the barrier to hear the crashing noise of bikes on a roof rack failing to go under it a few minutes later.

Sorry, if it were me, I’d not be satisfied and I’d do it again on the level.
I'd best get another piece of 2x1 then - that one has been re-purposed.

I have been under a barrier that says "1.88m" (Sowerby bridge tip) don't know how accurate the council measurements are.
I also dropped my son off at Manchester airport 2.0m I was ducking as I went in though.

We've been through a tunnel in Rouen a few times where IIRC the sign says 2.5M - I know that the van will fit but it doesn't stop me instinctively wanting to duck every time.

T5.1 with roof rack, pipe tube 2.16m entrance stated 2.2m. Drove in and parked no probs.

Returned and pulled out heading for exit, strange ground rising up but ceiling staying level?

Crash bang, lights going out, roof face ripping trunking apart. Security guy runs it,”You’ll have to pay for that!”

No! points to sign stating 2.2m, any marks on my van the centre management will be paying to paint and repair!

Got small claims letter, went with photo and metadata to prove location and me and mate had take a pic with tape 3 days after.

I then logged counter claim for minor marks. Magistrate awarded me. If there is a declared height and you are lower it’s the centres fault and liability. Now says max height 2m.

I take it that you didn’t mention your adjustable air suspension…

20230813_110330.jpgJust clears the raised door to the carport by about 40mm. The total clearance is 1910mm.

Was the greater height due to springs stretching and weight distribution over the incline? If reliance is being placed on a calculated height, I’d turn the van around and average the four heights achieved!

We sneak under 2m just, std van with 255 55 R18's. The shark fin is the highest point on ours

Yeah, from a purely geometric viewpoint, I'd convinced myself that taking an average was sound. However, as you've allude to, suspension and load distribution will have an incalculable impact so their effects need to be negated.

Are these for removing the van roof or the height barrier?

We have just visited a local bluebell wood and we knew it had a barrier to prevent overnight camping but a) didn’t know the height of it and b) didn’t know the height of the van.
We took the Fiat 500 instead and sailed under.
I now know the barrier claims to be 1.97m but that is on an incline.
Just heading out with my spirit level.
