Van Pulling To The Right With Suspension And 20' Wheels, Can You Help?

Hi

Bought a brand new T6 Kombi and had it lowered by 40mm and 20' wheels put on it.

I have had the tracking done etc at the time of fitting at Wessex Vans unfortunately it pulls to the right. Took it back and they re did it, still pulls to the right especially on the motorway and under acceleration.

The steering wheel always looks offset to the left slightly, for it to be straight I have to drive it on a slight right hand curve.

Anybody got any ideas what this is and why please?

Cheers

AJ

It’s been discussed on this forum over a few threads - have a search here and you’ll be able to see if yours is the same as what others are reporting.

as above recommendation from @Ads_Essex

but also if it was me . . .

sounds like you need to take the van to a 3rd party specialist and have the steering and suspension geometry reset and re-calibrated independently of VW or that garage.

if the steering wheel is offset (when your driving in a straight line) (but its on the correct splines) then the whole geometry has been adjusted well out of whack. ( or the steering wheel has been fitted one spline tooth off)

so id take it to somewhere else and have it 4-wheel laser aligned.

ask them to center the steering wheel and re-adjust the steering and suspension geometry back to true. ( it will be obvious to them where it needs to be from the % adjustments on the track rod ends and camber adjustment threaded rods)

they will give you a before and after printout of all the readings.

possible 4 wheel alignment cost £50-£100

that way you can compare the original garages setup.

I had this done after VW fitted a new engine in a T5.1 . . . . . .but after that it always pulled to the left....

Took it back to VW and they said the geometry was "true" and there was no problem . !!!

so took it to a third party place to get a second opinion . . . . . .

sure enough, after the third party adjusted it all . . . . . . No more pulling to the left.

So why VW showed it all in spec i dont know. . . . . . But facts are facts right!

My bus came from Wessex, their subbies (Kartechnic) fitted the B14's and dropped it 50mm.

The bus never pulled, but it scrubbed out the front offside tyre in less than 1000 miles.

After I did a bit of ranting the vehicle went directly to Protyre in Cabot Lane where the tracking was found to be miles out .

There was a bit of debate on whether Protyre could track my van because of the ACC, but it was done and has been spot on since.

If I were you I'd pop to Protyre and ask if they've seen your van at all, because neither Wessex or Kartechnic are able to do the alignment in-house and send the vehicles to Protyre.

Wessex will try and blame you for kerbing it, they tried that with me and then claimed that somebody had tried to steal my wheels and that was why the locking wheel nut was chewed up as well.

I've subsequently found Kartechnic to be pretty good and I use them for other bits and pieces on the van like fitting my new arb's.

Beware of Wessex, there's something slippery about him, I wouldn't go back, I can't quite put my finger on it, but I do think there are better companies locally.

Insert coin. That was my second time back to them to have it tracked, first time was when they set it up and I asked them to do the work.

I must point out that I'm pleased with their work so far, very professional. I thought I would come on here before I went back to them, gleam some info.

The second time of having my tracking done it was done at Protyre, I have the print out, not that it makes much sense to me.

Cheers

I'd be inclined to take it to another garage and get a second opinion, Trent's have a very good wheel alignment system now.

I don't know anything about tracking, but I do know that if the tracking is toe in/out for a quite a while that the tyre itself will obviously wear on one edge and that in itself will make the vehicle pull until it's replaced even if the tracking is spot-on.

In a perfect world you would have the tracking aligned when you have fresh tyres, but obviously that's not always feasible.

Edit - The other very good alignment place is Christchurch Tyre Company, Ross really knows his stuff in there and they also have an expensive Hunter machine.
