Vossen Wheels

Not wishing to stir the simmering pot, but......

I have a T32 for no other reason that it was the right spec at the right price at the right time, and I really didn't understand the nuances of T30 vs. T32 - and the salesman didnt think to explain, as there was an end of year sale to be had  I'm not a business user and VAT is paid up, no reclaim etc

I have various frustrations with my Kombi, some that I have created myself and some that are created by the various laws that now govern my vehicle over what I was previously familiar with.

So sensible question, why wouldn't I downplate to a T30?

I'm never going to carry more than my camping kit and a couple of pedal bikes, most of the time it's just me, a bike and some music.

While the suspension, wheel and tyre restriction is part of the problem that I have, one of my local bridges is also now enforcing a strict 3T mgw weight restriction, that means its a £50 fine if I stray across it.

Police to stop Range Rover drivers crossing Marlow Bridge from next week

I've had SVTech's number in my phone for weeks, but before I go down this route did I miss something obvious?

I saw a few Calis in France with steels (VW banded ones) and swooned. FAR nicer than daft giant wheels on comedy tyres.

IMO

Today 310 miles 5 hours 56 mph average (stopped for 10 mins to load wheels) For the first time ever the van told me to take a break and showed a coffee symbol. That was a new one, done longer trips both in milage and time before and never the message.

So it's not okay to slightly overload a camper/van but it IS okay to slightly overload four wheels TOTALLY critical to safety that are under tremendous load from several directions?
Now why are big/incorrectly rated wheels fitted to vans? Vanity. Nothing else.
Is it REALLY worth being in wiv da kidz to try and look cool (it has the opposite effect in my eyes)?

You do realise what catastrophic wheel failure does? Makes a tyre blowout look like a minor inconvenience. It is a TOTAL disaster and very likely to result in death. Do you know what the average wheel has to cope with? Not only massive mechanical loads but continuous, non stop, uneven heating and cooling. And non stop attack from corrosive substances. Loads are mainly lateral, rotational but also longditudinal. They have a very very hard life and from studying them (Materials Engineering, Swansea, 1997 BEng - the best MatEng Uni in Europe; we did a study on RS4 wheel failures with Bath Uni) you would be like the person who visits the sausage factory and NEVER eats one again - enlightened.

Don't mess with wheels, brakes or anything else IMO. They are completely and utterly safety critical.
You've kept you knowledge hidden from us for too long, you quiet retiring person, you.
The Audi RS4 wheel problem, what were the conclusions? I guess the the overall speeds; acceleration; and massive brakes (deceleration) really loaded those wheels up. Don't you think it a bit strange the alloy wheels only have load ratings; and not load & speed ratings like tyres; with the speed rating not only relating to overall speed but the performance characteristics of the vehicle; including braking and cornering?

The RS4 wheels were a combination of the wrong material (too brittle) used with the wrong wheel pattern design. TBH whoever designed them needed shooting. BUT BMW also had masses of issues with their OEM 19" alloys mostly on the E90/91/92 (3 series) cars; masses of them cracked but people had a hell of a job getting any warranty payments sorted on them. Naughty BMW. Suzuki also had issues with it's early Jimmy three spoke alloys - loads of failures but they sorted them quickly. So it's not always aftermarket alloy's; the big car firms can get it wrong too.

Not sure when wheels aren't speed rated but they tend to be more universal; you can get 18" alloys for a BMW 114i (slow as hell) that are the same as the 125d/125i (not slow); you could even fit M135i alloys to a 114i but you'd look a complete muppet.

But load ratings is all we have - and pushing over or even near them is just asking for trouble.

Yes a van won't do 200mph or get to 60 in under 5 seconds BUT it's heavy; so while not fast, those wheels are still doing a heck of a tough job. Loads of weight, loads of heat from hard working brakes.

Jesus Bloody Christ, Banding steel wheels is about as dangerous as it gets, some dodgy back street garage cutting/shutting/bodging bloody wheels up. Coded welder???? X-rayed welds????? Quality Control/Assurance???????? Design Finite Stress Analysis??????

I'm off to book a holiday in North Korea where it is safer..........

Senior moment - I didn't mean banded. I meant these type of wheels;

Gives me a chance dig out one of my fave videosfor you daring fellas with your modded vans...please don't take offence all done in jest, would be a boring old world if we all liked the same things!
Oh @Caravellet6 that had me laughing, never seen that one before. Absolutely brilliant! Some of those old cigar ads were so funny, used to love all of the Russ Abbott ones.

I am wondering if SV tech could change your vehicle from a Van to a Car, and that way you can keep your 3200 rating, as it only applies to vans all the MOT etc etc bits and bobs. My Vel is 3080kg and is a car. Road tax may be a few pounds more. Or alternatively re registering it as a lower weight van. Not sure that your axel weights would need to change, as the combined axels weights are nearly always higher than the Max Gross weight of the van. SV tech are boys alright.

I'm Told by VW dealership that my Caravelle T6 has t32 springs even though it's 3080kg rated
I've also been looking at different brands of wheels and most larger wheels are made for Range Rover fitment and therefore have only been tested to there gross weights and not T32 specs
I would like to check what's stamped on my OEM VW Springfield wheel now !!!
Has anybody got a spare to look at the back of it I wonder
Does VW make a OEM 19" wheel for transporter

No 19"'s available from VW for a T6
Are you really looking at different wheels? Springfields are a £1500 upgrade for a Vel, aren't they?
And very very nice as well

Caravelle exc gross weight 3080 kg
Amarok gross weight 3080kg and they have 19" wheels not sure on offset and width
