You've hit on all the reasons why I decided to go for a detachable towbar and rack even if it did work out at twice the price or more! Also, am I right in thinking that your screen name is after the album? If so, very well done indeed - your obviously a person with taste.
You are absolutely correct Ayjay, I adopted the pseudonym Kind of Blue, which is Miles Davis phenomenal masterpiece Jazz album Kind of Blue.

I love jazz and have a small modest collection of vinyl LP collected over the years. More recently acquired SACD and CD and some other disc medium. I record many Jazz programs from BBC R3 and BBC R2 occasionally BBC R6 or what might be on TV. I listen to a fair bit of BBC R3 classical broadcasts, R2 folk and blues I enjoy many forms of Jazz including Fusion, though not quite all Jazz and also enjoy Classical in its many forms, Blues, Progressive rock, Folk etc. Quite eclectic taste I suppose. I loathe the majority of pop. Kind of Blue would be part of my Desert island choice along with much of Ralf Vaughan Williams works. I have all his symphonies, conducted by Adrian Bolt on vinyl LP. I could go on. I am fortunate to have a half decent Hi-fi and a very large vaulted room to listen to it in.
Any way Ayjay, I will stop boring the backside off everyone else now. Are we the only listeners here?
A Tow Bar mounted carrier would not be suitable for me because it would get caught up. I was just interested to know about over height because of overhanging branches and brush. I was also very concerned about door opening or the lack of it. I had not heard and accounts of not being able to open doors before the post above. The Thule version looked at least as good as the others and well thought out clamps. Thule is also I would have thought easy to find, Halford's etc. My primary interest was on mounting the Spare - Wheel. Which in its normal mounting place sounds vulnerable to theft, becomes filthy and corroded and a right pain to extract. If it was underneath one might not find out about its absence until it was too late.
I have seen another tool or rack for wheel mounting on a German site and a UK site that appeared to be reselling it. I perhaps could find it if a mind to but at the moment I do not recall quite where. This mounting rack seems to hook on the top lip of the Door but bolts on to the door at the bottom. So it has some advantage of security and the disadvantages of inconvenience. It resembles a short ladder in effect. It is cheap and I guess someone could mount more than one of them across the back for those Icelandic adventures. Of course, most of us might be concerned about drilling the rear door. I should imagine that there are people on the forum who could fashion up their own wheel or cycle racks if they had a mind to.
Some of the German sites that are dedicated to off-road kit for vans, have all sorts of wonderful gear for all manor of functions also at very high prices.
