Webasto doesn't work - Caravelle T6

Now it refuses to start, I have the green LED of the remote flashing : long short - long short - long short (I look now on the net what it means).

The cause is stored in fault codes (of controller 18-Aux. Heat)

Not that it really matters anymore as you got the remote to work but stumbled on this in the workshop manual - looks like that flashing sequence means the heater refuses to start due to a fault.

As @mmi says, use VCDS to read unit 18 fault codes, should always give more accurate reason.

At your temperatures battery might struggle to supply enough power to the heater (and cabin blower).
 Good thinking there. Also the weather should be much milder tomorrow. If the extreme cold is the root cause the problem might just go away, at least temporarily.

It's still -30 here, I never had problem in the past with very cold temperature, even at -40°c.

The battery is not the problem, I have a charger per each battery, thr car is always plugged on the 220v, it's always full.

More information before the log :
This morning I went to the airport, driving 2h : the webasto works well, all the way (good, no problem to warm the engine AND the cabin when driving by this very cold conditions). If I stop, after just few minutes it stops.
I went back to home, 2h, working, then stops to work when the car is on the parking, engine running or not.

Is it a sensor pollution problem ? (driving, lot of air is pushing exhaust air away ?)

Now, the log :

So if it stops with the vehicle stopped but with the engine running then the difference is not higher voltage with the alternator (though still worth checking if you've had some corrosion building up on a connector that's adding resistance) but sounds like movement and maybe airflow?

Because back at the start the fault codes seemed to indicate an issue with the fans - and if air moving around the van seems to keep the heater running then again... The fans are not running well?

If there is only 1 fan, we checked/tested it yesterday, it's turning at 9500 tr/minute.
The airflow under the car is big (lot of air/steam), like normal. The noise is normal too, like always.

The original fault code this thread started from was with the combustion air blower. With those km’s, lot’s of use and no serviced ever, I wouldn’t be suprised if the blower would be weak, might explain why it works (only just) when driving.

But… the latest faults are
0057 - No fuel at heater
0135 - Heater Unit Locked

Especially the lock fault is 1h 15min later than the fuel fault and with no specifics of why.

 confused

The battery is not the problem, I have a charger per each battery, thr car is always plugged on the 220v, it's always full.
Agreed - there are no low voltage faults recorded.

The frequency of faults
0045 - Combustion Air Blower - has climbed from 13 (first log of 3.1.2024) to 29 (current log),
0021 - Combustion Air Blower - has climbed from 1 to 3,
0137 - Combustion Air Blower - has climbed from 6 to 14.

So indeed something to look at. FWIW failure rate of the blower has been extremely low - however, there have been heaters with dirt found in the blower. The air intake is above AdBlue tank so it's quite well protected - but still thinking about powdery snow....

0057 - No fuel at heater
Fault Frequency: 1
Fuel level: 52 l

thus plenty of fuel and not (the usual) associated "no flame detected" fault. I believe you even have the 80 litre fuel tank (from the first log)
Difficult to conclude anything specific (based on just 1 incident) - could indicate problem with Combustion chamber - which actually is more or less a consumable part because it eventually gets coked. Actually I'm surprised to hear it has not been replaced yet - perhaps good quality fuel and long burn times...

As an aside would be interesting to know how many hours the heater has accumulated and how much fuel it has burned. When you have time perhaps you could post a blockmap file from your heater?
VCDS > Applications > Controller Channel Map
[Single Controller Address - 01]
[Measuring Values]
[CSV file]
1704563696192.png
The result file blockmap-18-... will be in folder C:\Ross-Tech\VCDS\Logs\...

Don't the water heaters automatically lock out if the fuel runs low? Safety feature.
I suppose they do but I would have expected to see the ”locked” fault and another fault that details the reason for locking at the same timestamps, not hours apart. Now we don’t know if it got locked due to the fuel fault, blower fault or something else.

@mmi do you know if the freeze frame timestamp marks the first or latest occurrence? I suppose it would be the first occurence like mileage but not sure

Do you know if I can change, preventively, other parts ? (fan ?)
Not sure about the fan - unless it's actually broken.

Anyways, the most sold replacement parts:

Temperature sensor - 5Q0898047
Combustion chamber - 7E0 898 919
Additional coolant pump - 7P0 965 561 D (not a part of the heater itself)

Well, before purchasing parts separately probably worth to check what's the price of a complete heater - especially if you decide to go for the Combustion blower (=fairly expensive)

When fuel is low this heater does not lock - it just refuses to start, or shuts down. The fuel low for the heater equals to fuel low light on dash. Also the fault code is different - thus fires up when refueled. When locked needs releasing with a diagnostic tool.

Yes indeed, now the reason for locking is a kind of general. "Usually" the code comes with the reason, e.g.

For the heater timestamp and mileage are from the first occurence. However, the actual date is decoded (in current VCDS) a bit mysteriously but the time (hours:minutes:seconds) is correct as well as the mileage.

Would be nice to be correct but not that big a deal - more important that they actually increment and not be just random like a later occurring fault could have an earlier timestamp

Thanks for all your new messages.
I didn't had the time, yet, to read and to do new tests. I will try later today if I can.

Last night, I did a new fault list, this time with the engine running.
It is very strange ! Lot of problems, all are almost in the same time...

Please, look the log (I removed all test without fault).

The log was read at 299 450 km (yesterday night I drove 220 Km).
The webasto is still working when the car is moving. Yesterday on a parking, it worked during 1h20 before to stop. Then impossible to use is again on the parking.

Hi @mmi,
This is a little bit of a hail mary attempt, but your post is the only result in google that shows almost the exact fault I'm getting. Mine is

Code:
0006 - Heater Unit Locked
          B138F 4B [00001000] - Over Temperature
Intermittent - Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear
             Freeze Frame:
                    ....

Parking heater: operating condition: After-run - burnout
                    92
Coolant temperature of parking heater: 46 °C
                    Coolant temperature: 15 °C
                    Engine running status: not detected
                    Fuel level: 40 l
                    Heating performance: 5000 W
So basically only difference is that 90 != 92, whatever that number means.

But my question is, was this specific fault situation ever solved? My symptoms are basically that webasto starts, runs for ~30+ seconds and locks up. If I run the engine for few minutes (longer if outside temperature is lower), then it starts fine and runs full hour without issues.

Big big thank you if you happen to see this message and remember what caused that fault!

So basically only difference is that 90 != 92, whatever that number means.
Not really - the both numbers appear with the same fault - on same vehicle in different occasions.

But my question is, was this specific fault situation ever solved?
Yes.The final cure was the temperature sensor. The coolant pump was replaced first but didn't cure it completely. The fault happened only once in 10-20 startups.
