WestDubs Poptop

.................. and it also looks like more like a motor caravan from the outside:sneaky: for when I eventually apply to DVLA.

Good luck with the DVLA but It seems to take more than looking like a motor caravan to persuade them that it's a motor caravan for registration purposes! That said, let us all know how you get on with them please.

I have one on my T5.1 white on white with a Turquoise scenic canvas. Having minor issues with rattles and squeaks but they have been spot on and refered me to a local fitter to make some adjustments which i have yet to do. Van isn't lined out yet so in'm hoping the noises will be reduced when its lined out.

I did indeed, although have nothing to compare it with.
It was installed by a local chap in Corby who’s an authorised fitter.

Turned around in a week, the canvas looks great in grey and has the scenic option. Inside there are punch outs for LED lights, of which I asked for 4 to be wired up. I’ve also have an NDS flex 180W solar panel added to the roof. The cable is under the panel so no ugly wiring or boxes on the roof. Also added flexible LED reading lights with 2 USB sockets and strip lighting routed under the bed.
The bed has yet too be fitted at my request as I’m still in the process of the conversion and it will only get in the way. Plus my wife rather likes the Union Jack that Three Bridges have on their bed, (ceiling) so I’ve got to investigate that at some point.

The roof itself is sturdy and opens up easily enough. The only thing I don’t like but knew about was the straps for securing the roof down. I’m sure there’s a better method kicking around.
You can opt for stealthier options, but this allows you to keep all the bedding in the roof and it also looks like more like a motor caravan from the outside:sneaky: for when I eventually apply to DVLA.

All in all I think it’s the right balance between looks and costs.

I can take some pictures if that would help? Please remember that it’s not finished though:)

Yes please, would love to see some pictures :)

@PIPPS30
Who in Kent fitted your roof?
Very sorry only just seen this it was a company called Kent Poptops based at Wrotham Heath near Maidstone. A small 3 man unit but do anything camper conversion related. As mentioned before we have some bloody cracking days in the camper and many a comment on the roof.
Dan is the man who owns the company give him a bell

You may have seen my previous review on Westdubs in Worchester who are the manufacturer of the westdubs pop tops and it was not a great review. I have asked it be deleted as the 1st post had very little good things to say but as time has gone on and with some use out of the roof my anger at them has levelled out slightly. Many thanks to mod/admins for doing that.
I felt the job was rushed, I had damage to the sewing where the clips go in which caused leaks when it rained. They clipped the straps in but then lifted the bed while the roof was up which put tension on the sewing on the canvas. I then figured this was normal way to do it as I was given the proper introduction to use of the pop top considering this was my first ever one. This then caused leaks.
They were happy to replace the canvas if I drove there and back and took the day off but would not refund any of my time and travel and full tank of fuel for their poor work.

My recommendation back then was if you go for a westdubs roof, make sure you do not go to the manufacturer, have it fitted by a reputable conversion company. I would probably still say the same, they did rush the job but there is nothing wrong with the roof itself apart from it was rushed and got damaged that way.
However in hindsight if doing it again I would spend the extra and go skyline or reimo if I do it again.

With my life being busy and hectic I was never going to get back up to them for a repair and with covid things went up in the air. Before Covid they contacted a local conversion company and asked if they could replace the canvas for me which was really good of them. Then Covid happened so I was unable to get this arranged. Covid lockdown sort of ended but then the company shut down due to the owner being vulnerable health wise so that option was out the window.. Let me say that was absolutely no fault of Westdubs and they did atleast try, they said I would have to come to them now as they could not arrange it with another.
Fast forward a few months and I still did not get it sorted. I contacted Stew from Westdubs who spoke with Chris, I asked if they could send me a new canvas and some upgraded lifting struts as I had fitted loads of solar and the current struts were a little slow. My plan is to get a local company to change the canvas as I can simply drop the van off to them and leave it there. They guys at Westdubs got the canvas and upgraded struts in the post 1st thing in the morning for me.

So although its not been fixed yet I feel they have atleast gone above and beyond what they needed to do to get the problem solved. To sum up, the roofs are great, the customer service is great, the fit not too great, maybe I was just unlucky.

Through all this I learnt one thing. Never use the straps included with the canvas of a westdubs. Buy a bellows bungee. You will not regret it. I started making and selling the bellows bungee because of the problems I had and now I have a bungee, I never have to jump up on the bed to fit the back strap or front one, I never worry about unclipping the strap when raising the bed into the roof. Its the way forward.... I love to get a little plug in ;-) grab a bellows bungee, I can make for lwb and swb in many colours.

Hi all I’m a complete noob and have a couple of (possibly silly) questions regarding the westdubs roof... I’ve just got a LWB T6 with a westdubs roof, what beds/mattresses do people have in these, and can this be left in when the roof is closed?!
Also, when putting the roof down, do I push the bed base back up into the roof then pull it all down together, or do I just pull the roof down onto the bed?!
Thanks in advance for your help!

max thickness is 2" which can stay up there. I ordered 2 different types of memory foam at 1" thick each and cut down slightly. I went with a small double.

Hi, I’m new on here and to vw transporters - I have a poptop on my van and have read about the horrors of nipping the poptop in the roof mechanism - how much are your bungees pls??

Hi Guys. Does anyone happen to have any photos of the cab frame fitted of a Westdubs roof?
I’m in the middle of fitting my roof and am struggling with how the side frame does or doesn’t connect to the cab frame.
really what I need is a pic of the underside of an un-trimmed roof showing where the side frame and cab frame meet.
cheers
Dave

I have a West Dubs pop top on my T6 and have noticed recently that I occaisionally get a 'cracking' noise similar to a stone hitting the windscreen.
If I push on the roof while driving it seems to stop. Only 7 months old.

Does anyone have a similar problem or do I need to take it back to the guys who fitted it?

I have a Westdubs roof and haven't noticed anything like that in the my 3½ years of ownership. I obviously don't know who fitted yours but I can say that Wetsdubs themselves have been very good people to deal with on the couple of occasions that I've had to contact them.

Apologies for the long post but sometimes you have to call out a good experience.

I inherited a WestDubs pop top roof fitted in a T6 PV conversion I bought almost 12 months ago 2nd hand from the only owner post-conversion which had been completed in Nov 20.

A great roof, we’ve used it a lot BUT it was quite creaky at the cab end which, whilst irritating, I put down to what’s to be accepted as a conversion compromise, with nothing else to compare to.

Fast forward to last weekend, I was camping with the family down in Ledbury and had felt that the creaking had got worse in recent weeks. By sheer chance I was on the WestDubs website the day before I realized they were based 25 minutes from the campsite we were going to for a long weekend. I gave them a call to ask if I could pop in the next day for them to take a look and give me some advice on how to lessen the creaks and maybe a recommendation for an approved Westdubs fitter near my home to make any improvements. No problem they said, sounds like it might be a metal on metal creak, we close at 12.30 so try and get to us before 12.

Managed to get there at 11.30 to a friendly welcome and someone came out to take a look in the car park. Initial thought was the sides of the front reinforcing frame and it was carpeted differently to the way they do it. But basically they wouldn’t really be able to tell without taking some of the carpet off and investigating. “Oh well, I said, can you recommend anyone near me?” “Hang on, we might be able to take a look here whilst you wait” and off they went to check with Nora, one of the company directors, who was lovely. She had spoken to me on the phone and gave the ok for the team to take a look, and they would need about an hour. I had the family and dog so they gave us some pointers for some nearby dog walks and off we went.

We came back and had a coffee in the waiting room, thumbed some VW van magazines and the guys came to get me to come take a look.

Upshot was it hadn’t been fitted as per their recommended instructions: self-tappers used (bodged too with lots of failed attempts) instead of rivets, very little glue/bonding agent between the pieces and several other points. Then they took me to a table to show me what they’d found. My reinforcing frame was laid out in front of me with all the random self-tapping holes which can work their way loose and allow movement hence the creaking.

I wondered why they’d taken it out to show me and how long it would take to put back. And then it all made sense. They had replaced with a brand new frame, riveted, bonded, and re-carpeted all exposed areas! They had also replaced the pull down straps, the rings they lock against (which had also been badly fitted first time) and even gave me a carpeted board to fill the gap! I was completely in shock - what fantastic service!

Basically they weren’t happy with how their product had been fitted by someone else, and had rectified it to the best of their standards (without removing the whole roof and all side bars etc.) there and then. And also beyond when they were due to close, and to someone who didn’t have an appointment.

I spoke with Nora to settle up and pay for parts and labour but she wouldn’t hear of it just some beer tokens for the lads.

Amazing! A true family business, proud of their product and service. I’m very rarely surprised and impressed with companies so this experience has floored me.

Oh and has the creak gone? Yes, the cab above my head is now a nice quiet place to be. Completely transformed my experience of driving the van from something that felt a bit cheap at times (anything but, right?) to something much more like a normal car. If anything now my ears pick up the cabinets and other squeaks more but that’s inevitable in a camper!

So would I recommend the roof? Yes. Would I recommend Westdubs? Absolutely. They smashed it. I took a look at canvas upgrade options too (panoramic) whilst I was there and wouldn’t hesitate to drive the 2.5 hrs back to have any work done there.

Even got a quick photo opportunity with my filthy van in their cool backdrop!

We have installed a few WestDubs pop tops. Think they are a great quality value for money option. Canvas is good quality and fits really well, with a wide range of choices, You can get the panoramic canvas option too. Gives a pretty standard profile, but does allow for a good mattress to be left inside. Good balance between usability durability vs the extra cost of a top of the market option (SCA etc)

Sorry to bump old thread. But when closed is there enough room to keep the duvet and pillows up there?!
