What Have You Done To Your Van Today?

Today I,ve fitted the bonnet carbon protector. Waiting for tiger seal to set. I've sprayed and bonded the the rear spoiler on. I've also fitted the front splitter, new wing mirror top and bottom covers with orange detail strip. And all importantly the 18" alloy I've been waiting to install.

Busy, busy boy.

Is the bonnet protector bonded?

Almost finished with my working van / camper combo. Just a few small panels left to do. :)
Don't let the looks deceive you :) This is a fully insulated, solar lithium powered car. The pictures shows the car in it's working configuration, but it has designated space for portable/removable fridge and gas cookers. A custom slide-out bed fits between the racks on each side. The conversion from van to camper takes less than 10 minutes. :)

Features include:
  • 200W Solar on the roof
  • 100A Lithium leisure battery
  • Thule 3200 awning
  • Sliding side door window
  • Sound deadened and thermal insulated
  • 6 x double USB charging socket
  • 3 x 12V outlets
  • Additional ceiling lights (not visible on picture)
  • Additional lights by D-pillar
  • Lights in tailgate (This gives working light on the ground when tailgate is open, as well as inside a tailgate tent used when camping).
  • Removable L-boxx toolboxes (Toolboxes can be swapped with L-boxx'es containing camping equipment)
  • 55L compressor cooler
  • Custom long space in cabinet for 2 small electric scooters
  • Right cabinet hides a Webasto heater in D-pillar corner. Heating is routed behind the panels in custom 3D-printed ducts.
  • Right cabinet is in the same height as the bed, effectively giving 20cm wider bed.
  • Custom easy clean floor.

I like the idea of these ducts - could create many options for better layouts.

Yeah the factory duct for aux heaters looks like a giant afterthought. Combined with the panel which covers it - a loot of interior space is wasted.

I've 3D-printed louvres in the rear from which the air is sucked in and then the air goes via the heater, though hidden ducts, and exits beneath the cabinet.
One option here would be to exit the air straight out from the side panel, but in my case that would conflict with the mattress when the car is converted to a camper. By routing it beneath instead I effectively blow the heated air underneath the bed.

Unfortunately the webasto is quite a huge device, hence the lump by the D-pillar, but it's still far better than the factory solution.

Changed the headunit to a discover media one, had to update the usb but as highlighted in one of the photos one of then slots has to be removed with a Stanley blade to make it fit the connection properly. GPS puck was fitted to the metal bar behind the glove box then CP removed and apple car play and Android auto unlocked

Which front splitter did you go for?

I’m keen for a Matt finish one as I know if I get a gloss version I won’t be happy until I upgrade the grills with gloss. Seems hard to find though.

Mine hits 4 years old on 1 August so I've booked it in for a service, MOT and Cam belt / water pump change for mid July. It's only done a bit over 9K miles so far but we will be driving down to Brittany next and the return trip with a bit of touring around should add another 1500 miles our so to the clock before it goes in for the work. As I'm covered for the service and MOT by the VW All In warranty, it's being done at VW Vans Swindon and I just hope that they're OK.

I have my van booked in there for a service next month. I got two free services as part of the deal when I bought it from them in August. I didn’t take the van to them for the MOT, I use an independent for that as I’ll likely do with the service when I’ve used up my freebies.
