Which caravan battery???

Hi all. I've recently purchased a touring caravan a couple of weeks ago and put it straight to storage. It's the first chance this weekend to get it out and have a play but it came with no battery. It's obviously the best time to buy one but not sure if a lithium would work in it as don't know the charging specs fitted to the caravan. I have seen somewhere that I can charge a lithium if there's a setting on the charger for GEL?? Does this sound right?? I can't compare the set up with my van as it's just a Kombi and i have no elec set up in it. Also any top tips for a newbie to the touring caravan World??

Fitting a lithium isbtue best way forward.

Most lithium's need 14.2v to be fully charged.... And most caravans just have a basic 12v charger.

So you could try and see how you go, or just replace the caravan charger with a branded unit that has a lithium profile..... Ie Victron.

Depending on your 12v loads in the caravan, you might want the 10/20/30A version.

Suppose 10a would suffice as it would mainly be EHU whilst on site but none whilst in storage so the lithium would be better as I can charge from a lower state of discharge can't I?

Yes, and the lithium will last twice as long as the AGM equivalent.

Look at getting a branded lifepo4 with BT app so you know it's charge level and stuff.

I’d be taking out of the caravan when it’s in storage, and taking it home & keep it on a maintenance charger.

I’ve always stuck with a good quality lead acid leisure battery with no issues at all - my battery is approximately 5 years old and still going strong. Coupled with 200w solar and changing the lighting to led I can last for 3-4 days without a mains hookup. The TV and water pump are the biggest draw, everything else is gas powered.

How often does it get used?? My thinking is , that if it lies up in storage all winter and maybe a.trip once a month, maybe longer, how long would it last?? Don't really want to change it every 2 years or so.

I now have sold caravan but upgraded a number of years ago to one like below...

Reason was needing bigger for motor mover. Mine charged when on ehu and also when connected to towing vehicle. Battery out as a requirement for winter storage... Or at least disconnected! I took out and stored in house. Green circle on top showing charge never moved!

For £40 more you can get a Fogstar Drift which is a much better battery with UK support. That is an offer price that will likely go back to the normal £369. Or for £40 less you can get their Eco version which doesn’t have heating and a few other features.

Once the Caravan is in storage the battery is removed and kept in my garage on trickle charge perfectly maintained. £120 ish for 5 years use so far - happy days

My eldest lad has a 130ah he got last year. His is always on trickle via ehu as it's on his path so I decided to go lithium.
