Had pipes off down to the top of the intake they seem dirty but not as bad as some I’ve seen.
Front egrpipe been off seems totally fine.
The rear egrpipe is fine was updated a couple of year ago for the improved version.
I’m running out of time...
Somehow I missed that earlier! I’m almost 100% sure that the new EGR won’t be clogged at 7K miles, IF they renewed it.
Another possibility is that the pipes are fouled with carbon, there are different types of EGR used in Transporters, VW modified some pipes so that they don’t block with carbon...
I had the same code recently, garage I took the van to reckoned readings didn’t suggest a clogged EGR, on further investigation he found a split in the EGR to exhaust manifold rear pipe which he replaced along with new gaskets. He did show me the part complete with split.

You would need to remove the EGR and buying a blanking kit for the pipes. Then get it mapped out of ecu.
When my EGR in my trusty works van went for the 3rd time I bit the bullet and had it removed and mapped out.

Cleared twice now and comes back almost immediately. Drives fine no stutters and accelerates as normal.
Would removing the front stainless EGRpipe and inspecting give an indication of how ‘sooty’ it is? (No Sweep jokes!)

I have a 2018 dsg.
To take the pipe out took for me 35 min. I started from left hand bottom screw (by the oil cooler) it takes more effort spent on it rest three easy.
Putted back took for me around 2h most tricky again...

Some notes:
The steel pipe under the EGR can be bent down about 10mm, just enough to expose the nut behind it (lower left nut as you look from the right), fairly easy to get a deep socket on it then...

The answer to your question is a bit irrelevant, the point is you can't really start fault finding or diagnostics until you have rectified all known defects.
Let us know how you get on, hopefully fixing the split pipe will get your van back to how it should be.
