The forum is rammed full of useful correct info on Transporter axle load compliant wheel and tyre load ratings.

seems to think he’s found some groundbreaking insurance flaw that no one else has identified……

I just had a very interesting conversation with a Tyre fitting company. They stated commercial vehicles ( Vans and Conversions) cannot use 20 inch tyres as they are 4 ply not 8 ply construction . Load Rating is irrelevant ! The tyres must have a ‘C’ marked on them for commercial. Any tyre without this ie XL / 106 / 103 etc are car tyres and thus will void any insurance.
They told me a customer had actually encountered an insurance problem due to this !

Obviously this is a ‘can of worms’ !!!!

Any comments ?????
I disagree with this tyre fitter and suggest he’s using outdated information.

Transporters are defined as either light commercial vehicles, class 7 MOT, or passenger vehicles, class 4 MOT.

If you have a read through the MOT testing information on the Gov.uk website for class 4 and 7 you will find that the load rating is only mentioned for class 7.

Within the load rating requirements for class 7 there is no mention that the tyre must have a C rating. The only requirement is that the load rating of the tyre is sufficient for the maximum axle weight of the vehicle.

It is that requirement that I use when choosing which tyres to supply for any given vehicle.

In fact there is no mention of the C rating anywhere in the section of requirements relating to tyres.

This behaviour is not acceptable and a reminder to everyone that insults and rudeness will not be accepted, i hope we can draw a line here and move on before any further action is required

Quote from a tyre company:
There is more than one type of heavy-duty tyre. Extra-load (XL) tyres are suitable for smaller vans, but larger commercial vehicles may require C-type or LT tyres. C-type tyres are suitable for commercial vehicles with loads of up to 3.5 tons. LT stands for “light truck” and are for small to medium lorries. Always consult your manual to see which class of tyre your vehicle requires. Never assume you can fit an ordinary XL tyre onto a large C-class van.

I think the confusion is the difference ( or relationship) between Load Rating (suitable to the vehicles axle weight) ant the tyre being branded `C`. I`ve still got the original wheels for my T30 but am not at home at the moment. It would answer the question if in fact they are branded `C`. I understand they are`nt in the class 7 MoT class but it was a commercial vehicle before conversion.

@Big Al , I'm not sure that would answer the question definitively. As per the tyre label in post #57, a variety of tyres - some C-type, some not - can be fitted.

Well one is a commercial vehicle and one is not. So what I am suggesting is that different rules apply. One can legally travel at 70mph on a dual carriageway and one cannot, as stated in the Highway Code !
What we all need is Valid insurance, I’m sure you will agree.
The tyre issue does need legal clarification. Let’s hope the factual answer is defined.
If it’s a camper conversion then they can both travel on a dual carriageway at 70mph.

I wouldn’t take my advice from some cut and paste nonesense on protyre.
Here is their first recommended tyre on a search using my VRM where you can clearly see it states it as a 08EC25E1-086E-40BF-AB87-BACF2DB984A8.pngT33 PV.

Interesting ! Do you know if it needs to state ‘camper’ on the V5. You may already know DVLA are not very good at allowing V5 changes. And have recently been subject to some criticism .Many are stuck with original Van info.
