HI put engine in crafter was running good
previously had an injector
took up road for test
cut out and will not restart
no fault codes coming up
have checked with vcds - looks like i have fuel pressure etc so anyone have any ideas
thanks in advance

here is log for mmi

Thanks, on T6 Transporter the following value would be very suspicious

IDE00182Camshaft adaptation intake bank 1: phase position
13.1
°

This suggest a serious timing offset between crankshaft and camshaft.
Have you checked the timing belt and tensioners?

On Transporters 6 degrees offset has (supposedly) caused ECU not to fire injectors. E.g. here

Can you make a log while cranking with following items logged

VCDS > Engine > Advanced Measurement Values

IDE00021 Engine RPM
IDE00347 Air mass: actual value:
IDE00351 Main injection: start of activation
IDE00352 Main injection: duration of activation
IDE00406 Camshaft RPM
IDE00407 Rail pressure regulation: status
IDE00589 Fuel pressure
IDE07824 Tank-internal presupply pump 1 bank 1: activation

Tick "Group UDS requests" - by 8.

Click Log - Start
Crank the engine - 5 seconds.
Stop logging etc.
The logfile will be in folder ...VCDS\Logs
Please post the logfile.

here is next log thank you
yes checked timing all ok , had anew belt before engine fitted , but have checked since cutting out and all is ok

Thanks, good to know.
Well, the data in the log looks perfectly normal - except the engine does not ingest any air. Hopefully the air box is disconnected? (Orange column)
Anyways,
IDE00021 Engine RPM - Engine cranks very well
IDE00347 Air mass: actual value: - NO AIR FLOW INTO ENGINE MEASURED
IDE00351 Main injection: start of activation - ok
IDE00352 Main injection: duration of activation - injectors are fired starting by 2837 µs burst
IDE00406 Camshaft RPM - sensor alive (aligns with crankshaft sensor IDE00021)
IDE00407 Rail pressure regulation: status - normal
IDE00589 Fuel pressure - normal
IDE07824 Tank-internal presupply pump 1 bank 1: activation - normal (activates just before cranking starts)

Confused here - engine should start just fine - electrically.

  1. Compression test?
  2. Do injectors actually inject fuel into cylinders - can you smell diesel from exhaust?
  3. Clogged exhaust?

Could try a DIY compression measurement by logging cylinder pressure (by VCDS) - however, not sure if engine's sensor is sensitive enough (never measured). However, noticed that in the blockmap file (the 1st log) cylinder pressure of 35 bars was registered - thus seems perfectly normal - just thinking if it's back pressure from exhaust?

This set is slightly different - would record cylinder pressure, throttel valve position, EGR position, DPF pressure - just to verify also those work as supposed. Got bit curious how clogged the DPF is - the ECU has registered fairly high soot and ash loads.
IDE00434 Particle filter: soot mass calculated 33.01 g
IDE00435 Particle filter: soot mass measured 30.56 g
DPF regeneration is pending.

IDE06059 Particulate filter: oil ash mass 131.23 g
IDE06060 Particulate filter ash load limit 110 g

IDE00021 Engine RPM
IDE00347 Air mass: actual value:
IDE00352 Main injection: duration of activation
IIDE00589 Fuel pressure
IDE07742 Cylinder head: pressure sensor 3 bank 1: raw value
IDE07744 Particle filter: air pressure sensor 1 bank 1: raw value
IDE07757 Exhaust recirc.valve 1 bank 1: posit.feedback - Actual value
IDE07771 Throttl.valve adapt. 1 bank 1: posit feedback - Actual value

Hi yes air box has been disconnected, will try next set of logs , it will run on easystart/brake cleaner so i am assuming fueling issue ,
I have also sent away for testing
My original 4 injectors from original engine just to confirm there okay and swap them over as no fuel smell so possible injectors but i would say uncommon all to go like that

Thanks,

IDE00352 Main injection: duration of activation
In the log "fluctuating" value means active operation. Fixed (frozen) value means no active injection.

IDE00589 Fuel pressure
Very slow pressure build-up - took 1.7 seconds to reach pressure where injectors are fired. Normal would be below 0.5 seconds. See the first log - took 0.3 seconds to build up proper pressure.

IDE07742 Cylinder head: pressure sensor 3 bank 1: raw value
Interestingly there is quite an offset in sensor value (32.8 bar at 0 RPM).
Practically no change during cranking
IDE07744 Particle filter: air pressure sensor 1 bank 1: raw value
Fairly large offset (7.3 mbar at 0 RPM) but shouldn't matter.
Fairly large pressure loss in DPF even during cranking (about 25 mbar minus the offset)=18 mbar.

IDE07757 Exhaust recirc.valve 1 bank 1: posit.feedback - Actual value
Normal - no recirculation during cranking
IDE07771 Throttl.valve adapt. 1 bank 1: posit feedback - Actual value
Normal - throttle fully open during cranking

Have you seen this?

Battery was abit flat when trying to start that may be why
I tried an injector on the rail but pointing out the bonnet it was getting activation but no fire/spray
Hoping once ones been tested this week i can try a good set in there to prove my diag as i think injectors of gone down
Just very unusual for all 4 but maybe there is another problem causing it (have checked hpfp solenoid for swarf and a sample of fuel but looks okay

UPDATE
Hi sorry for long reply
Been waiting for my injectors to be tested
They have come back and all failed on basic first testing due to contamination
Have removed fuel tank
And unfortunately its what i thought, full of metal/ swarf
Full new fuel system required
Will let you know when all done and running
Thank you for your help along the way

Sorry to hear that. Let us know what you think the root cause was.

RESOLVED!!
swarf contamination was to blame for injectors fail , high pressure fuel pump tested and found to be faulty and the cause
New intank pump , all lines leaned , new high pressure pump and 4 injectors
All up and running
